Chambéry
Chambéry is about 85 km from Geneva Airport, roughly an hour by car on the A41 motorway via Annecy. Rail links from Geneva exist but usually involve a change and take longer than the drive, so for business travellers, families and groups a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is often the more efficient option, while the train suits relaxed solo trips.
- Distance from GVA: about 85 km
- Drive time: around 1 hour
- Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France
- Train option: yes, from Geneva Cornavin, generally with a change
- Best for: business in Savoie, city breaks, gateway to the Tarentaise and Maurienne
Chambéry, historic capital of Savoy
Chambéry was for centuries the capital of the Duchy of Savoy, and its history shows in the Château des Ducs de Savoie, the arcaded streets of the old town and the Fontaine des Éléphants, the town's emblematic monument. Les Charmettes, the house where Jean-Jacques Rousseau spent several years, is just outside the centre. Today Chambéry is the prefecture of Savoie, a university town and an economic centre, with a busy station and good road links to the Alps.
Visitors fall into several groups: business travellers heading to companies, institutions and the technology parks around the town; tourists on a city break or a tour of Savoie; students and academics; and skiers using Chambéry as a staging point on the way to the Tarentaise or Maurienne valleys.
The town is also a natural base for exploring the surrounding mountains, with the Bauges and Chartreuse massifs close by, and for visiting lakes such as the Lac du Bourget and the Lac d'Aiguebelette. Several of these places are poorly served by public transport, which influences how visitors choose to get around once they have arrived.
The train: comfortable but indirect
From Geneva Airport you first take a train to Geneva Cornavin. From there, trains towards Savoie can take you to Chambéry, but most journeys involve a change, often at Culoz, Aix-les-Bains or Annecy depending on the route and time of day. The scenery along the Rhône and around the Lac du Bourget is attractive, and the trains are comfortable.
The disadvantages are time and complexity. The total journey is usually longer than the motorway drive, the number of connections falls in the evening, and a late flight can easily make you miss the last convenient train. With heavy bags or children, two changes are tiring after a flight.
Coaches and buses
Long-distance coaches sometimes link Geneva and Chambéry, and in winter, seasonal ski coaches from Geneva Airport to the Tarentaise resorts pass the area on the motorway. However, none of these is built around the needs of a visitor heading for Chambéry itself, and fixed schedules may not match your flight.
Private transfer: a single, predictable journey
By road, the route leaves the airport, crosses the border into France and follows the A41 south past Annecy and Aix-les-Bains to Chambéry. Your chauffeur takes you directly to a hotel in the old town, an office, a university building or a private address. For skiers, the same car can continue towards the Tarentaise resorts if needed.
A transfer is particularly useful for:
- business travellers with a meeting soon after landing, who can request an invoice for the company;
- delegations and teams travelling together in a van or minibus;
- families needing child seats and room for luggage;
- late-night arrivals and early-morning departures.
The fleet includes the Business Sedan for up to three passengers, the First Class Sedan for those who want added comfort, the Mercedes V-Class van for up to seven passengers and ten bags, and a Mercedes Sprinter minibus for larger groups. A chauffeur by the hour, from two hours, suits days with several appointments.
Cost, timing and the return journey
A private transfer is priced per vehicle, not per person, so for two or more travellers the cost difference with rail narrows. On weekdays, traffic around Geneva and Annecy at rush hour can add some time; on winter Saturdays, the motorway towards the Alps is busy with skiers. For departing flights, booking a return transfer gives you a fixed pick-up time and avoids an early start with connections.
An honest summary: if you are travelling alone, with light luggage and a flexible day, the train is a pleasant and economical way to reach Chambéry. If time matters, if you are several people, or if you land late, the car turns a multi-stage rail journey into a single hour on the motorway.
