Sallanches
Sallanches is about 65 km from Geneva Airport, roughly an hour by car on the A40 motorway up the Arve valley. The Léman Express serves the town's station, called Sallanches-Combloux-Megève, after a change at Geneva Cornavin, so the train is a valid option for light travellers; for families, skiers heading on to the resorts or late arrivals, a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is more direct.

- Drive time: around 1 hour
- Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France
- Train option: yes, change at Geneva Cornavin for the Léman Express

Sallanches: a valley town facing Mont Blanc
Sallanches is a lively market town in the upper Arve valley, rebuilt after a great fire in the nineteenth century and known for its spectacular view of the Mont Blanc massif rising directly behind it. It is a practical base with shops, services and a station, surrounded by smaller villages on the slopes, such as Cordon and Combloux, and within easy reach of Megève and Saint-Gervais. Many visitors pass through it on the way to these resorts, while others choose it for its central position, its weekly market and its quieter, everyday atmosphere compared with the ski villages.
The town also hosts a hospital that serves the whole upper valley, and it is a commercial centre for the surrounding communes, so business travellers, healthcare visitors and families visiting relatives are a regular part of the traffic from the airport, not just holidaymakers.
By train: the Léman Express and its limits
The Léman Express does not stop at Geneva Airport. You take a train from the airport to Geneva Cornavin and change there for the line through Annemasse and up the Arve valley, calling at La Roche-sur-Foron, Bonneville, Cluses and then Sallanches. The station's name, Sallanches-Combloux-Megève, reflects its role as the rail gateway for these nearby resorts.
For a solo traveller staying in town, this is a comfortable and logical option. For those continuing to Combloux, Megève or Cordon, it is only part of the journey: from the station you still need a bus, taxi or lift up the mountain roads. With skis, children and luggage, three stages become hard work, and evening connections thin out after a delayed flight.
Besides the train, in winter, shared coaches link Geneva Airport with the main resorts of the Mont Blanc area, sometimes calling near Sallanches. Local buses connect the station with surrounding villages and resorts. They are useful for budget travellers on popular arrival days, but timings are fixed, and your accommodation may not be near a stop.
Private transfer: direct and flexible
By road, the route leaves the airport, crosses the border into France and follows the A40 towards Chamonix, leaving at the Sallanches exit. Your chauffeur can take you to a hotel or apartment in town, or continue straight up to Combloux, Cordon, Megève or Saint-Gervais without any change. That flexibility is the main reason many visitors choose a car for this route.
A transfer is especially worthwhile for:
- families with young children, for whom child seats can be provided;
- skiers with equipment heading to a resort above the town;
- groups sharing a fixed price per vehicle in a Mercedes V-Class van or Sprinter minibus;
- arrivals late in the evening or departures early in the morning.
Saturday traffic in the ski season
The upper Arve valley is one of the busiest routes into the Alps on winter Saturdays, with traffic heading to Chamonix, Megève, Saint-Gervais and the surrounding resorts. The A40 and the roads around Sallanches can slow considerably at peak hours. If your dates allow, arriving on another day of the week makes a real difference. Trains avoid road congestion, but they can also be busy with skiers and luggage on changeover days. A chauffeur will plan timing with the traffic in mind.
The verdict
The train via Cornavin is a sound choice for light travellers staying in Sallanches itself. A private car becomes the stronger option as soon as you are travelling with family, ski gear or a group, heading beyond the town, or arriving at an hour when connections are thin. Some visitors combine both: train on a relaxed daytime arrival, car for an early-morning departure.
For summer visitors the balance shifts slightly towards the train, since roads are clearer and luggage lighter. Even then, if you are staying in one of the hillside villages rather than in the town, the final climb is where a car makes the most practical difference, particularly with children or after a long-haul flight.
