Aix-les-Bains
Aix-les-Bains is about 75 km from Geneva Airport, around 55 minutes by car on the motorway via Annecy. Rail connections from Geneva exist but generally involve at least one change, so the train takes noticeably longer than the drive; for spa guests, families and groups, a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is the simpler way to reach the lakeside town.

Aix-les-Bains in brief
Aix-les-Bains is a historic spa town on the eastern shore of the Lac du Bourget, the largest natural lake entirely within France. Its thermal tradition goes back to Roman times, and it became a fashionable resort in the nineteenth century, which still shows in its grand hotels, casino and parks. Today visitors come for thermal cures and wellness, for boating and swimming on the lake, for walks on the surrounding hills, and as a base for exploring Savoie, with Chambéry and Annecy both close by. Across the water stands the Abbey of Hautecombe, burial place of the House of Savoy.
The town's visitors are therefore quite varied: patients and guests on thermal stays of several weeks, holidaymakers on the lake in summer, cyclists drawn by the climbs of the surrounding mountains such as the Mont Revard, and business visitors heading to the Savoie technology and business parks between Aix and Chambéry. Each group has different priorities when it comes to the airport journey.
The train: possible, but not the quickest
From Geneva Airport you first need to get to Geneva Cornavin, which is a short train ride. From there, regional trains towards Savoie can take you to Aix-les-Bains, but depending on the time of day the journey usually involves a change, and the total time is longer than the drive. Some travellers also go via Annecy and continue by bus or train.
The train is perfectly fine if you are in no hurry, have light luggage and enjoy the scenery. It becomes less attractive with large suitcases, which spa guests on a two- or three-week cure often have, or with children and their equipment. Late flights are another problem: the number of useful connections falls in the evening, and a missed change can mean a long wait.
Buses and coaches
Long-distance coaches occasionally link Geneva with Savoie, and regional buses run between Annecy, Aix and Chambéry. None of these is a direct airport service built around arriving passengers, though, so they rarely make sense for the first leg of a holiday. Once you are in Aix, local buses are useful for getting around town and to the lakeshore.
Some visitors also consider renting a car at the airport. It is an option if you plan to tour the region, but for a spa stay or a lakeside holiday where you will barely use it, the cost of rental and parking, plus the drive after a flight, can outweigh the convenience.
Private transfer: under an hour, door to door
By car, the route is straightforward: from the airport across Geneva, over the border into France and south on the A41 motorway past Annecy, then on to Aix-les-Bains. Your chauffeur drops you at your hotel, thermal residence or rented apartment. The journey is predictable and short, and you can rest after your flight instead of watching for station announcements.
A transfer suits particularly well:
- Thermal cure guests with heavy luggage for a long stay;
- Families with young children who need child seats;
- Groups such as associations or sports clubs travelling together in a van or minibus;
- Business visitors heading to meetings in Aix, Chambéry or the surrounding business parks;
- Late or very early flights, outside the hours when rail connections are convenient.
Comparing cost and comfort
The fixed price of a private transfer applies to the whole vehicle, so it compares most favourably for two or more people travelling together. A Business Sedan, the Mercedes E-Class, takes up to three passengers and three bags; a Mercedes V-Class van takes up to seven passengers with ten bags; and a Sprinter minibus is available for larger groups. For a solo traveller with a backpack on a flexible schedule, the train will be cheaper; for almost everyone else, the time saved and the absence of changes make the car worth considering.
Think about your return journey too. Spa cures often finish on a set day and flights home leave at fixed times. A pre-booked transfer back to Geneva Airport avoids early-morning connections and gives you a clear departure time.
