Besançon
Besançon is 174 km from Geneva Airport, about 2 h 20 by road, and the route crosses the border into France in the Jura mountains. The capital of Franche-Comté sits inside a near-perfect loop of the Doubs river, guarded by a citadel built by Vauban that is listed by UNESCO, and has a long history of clock- and watchmaking. AirportsTransfers.ch offers a direct transfer through the Jura from Geneva arrivals to your address in the city.

The route across the Jura
The usual way from Geneva follows the Swiss motorway north towards Lausanne and then towards Vallorbe, where the road crosses the border into France. From there it continues through the forests and pastures of the high Jura to Pontarlier, a town known for its absinthe history, and descends through the valley of the Loue and the Doubs plateaus towards Besançon. The landscape is green, open and quiet compared with the Alpine routes, with wooden farms, spruce woods and cheese dairies along the way.
The Jura plateau is high and can be snowy in winter, so winter tyres and extra time are recommended between November and March. Outside those months the road is pleasant and rarely congested, though heavy goods traffic near the border can slow things at peak hours.
The citadel and the loop of the Doubs
Besançon's site is its great asset. The Doubs wraps almost completely around the old town, and the remaining neck of land is closed by a high rock on which Vauban, the military engineer of Louis XIV, built a massive citadel in the late seventeenth century. The citadel is part of the UNESCO-listed group of Fortifications of Vauban and today houses museums, including one on the Resistance and Deportation, as well as a zoo and gardens within its walls. The views from the ramparts over the river loop and the rooftops are the defining image of the city.
Inside the loop, the historic centre known as the Boucle is built largely in a distinctive blue-grey and ochre limestone, with elegant mansions, the Renaissance Palais Granvelle, and squares lined with cafés. Boat trips on the Doubs pass beneath the citadel and through a tunnel cut under it, giving a different angle on the fortifications.
Time, art and famous names
Besançon has long been associated with timekeeping. It was for generations the centre of French watchmaking, and the Cathedral of Saint-Jean holds a remarkable astronomical clock with dozens of dials and animated figures. The Museum of Time, housed in the Palais Granvelle, traces the history of measuring time from sundials to modern precision instruments. The Musée des Beaux-Arts et d'Archéologie, one of the oldest public museums in France, holds collections of painting, drawing and archaeology.
Victor Hugo was born in Besançon, as were the Lumière brothers, pioneers of cinema; plaques on Place Victor Hugo mark both births. The city also has a large university and a tradition of research in physics and micro-engineering linked to its precision industries.
Food and day trips
Franche-Comté is the home of Comté, the slow-matured mountain cheese made in village dairies across the Jura, along with Mont d'Or in winter and the smoked Morteau sausage. Jura wines such as vin jaune, aged under a veil of yeast, and the sweet vin de paille come from vineyards to the south-west.

Practical tips
Carry a passport or ID card for the border crossing. The historic centre is compact and easily explored on foot, with a tram serving the wider city, so a car is not needed once you arrive. Summer and early autumn are pleasant for the citadel and the river paths, while winter can be cold and grey in the valley. If you are combining Besançon with visits in the Swiss Jura or the watch valleys, a chauffeur by the hour, minimum two hours, adds flexibility.
