Solothurn
Solothurn is 195 km from Geneva Airport, about 2 h 05 by road, without crossing any border. Set on the Aare at the foot of the Jura, it is often described as the most beautiful baroque town in Switzerland, with a cathedral, fortifications and patrician houses built in the period when French ambassadors resided here. AirportsTransfers.ch offers a direct transfer from Geneva arrivals to your hotel or office in the town.

From Geneva Airport to Solothurn
The most direct route leaves Geneva on the A1 towards Lausanne, then heads north to Yverdon-les-Bains and follows the A5 along Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Biel. Beyond Biel/Bienne the road runs along the foot of the Jura, through the Aare plain, to Solothurn. Depending on traffic, the chauffeur may instead take the A1 via Bern; both routes are motorway for almost their entire length.
The journey is pleasant in every season, with lake views for much of the way and the long wooded ridge of the Jura on the left. Rush hour around Lausanne is usually the only serious source of delay, so an early morning or mid-morning arrival tends to be the smoothest.
The ambassadors' town
From the sixteenth to the late eighteenth century, the French kings kept their ambassadors to the Swiss Confederation in Solothurn. The diplomats and the local families who prospered from foreign military service filled the town with elegant residences, gardens and churches, giving it a distinctly French, southern-tinged elegance unusual in German-speaking Switzerland. The former ambassador's residence still stands in the old town, and patrician summer houses dot the surrounding countryside.
The old town is compact and car-free in much of its centre. Its main street runs past painted façades, fountains and the Zytglogge clock tower with its moving figures, and the remains of the baroque fortifications, including bastions and towers, ring the historic core.
St Ursus Cathedral and the number eleven
The landmark of Solothurn is St Ursus Cathedral, a light-filled classical church in pale local stone, approached by a broad flight of steps. It is closely tied to the town's fascination with the number eleven. Solothurn was the eleventh canton to join the Confederation, and the motif appears everywhere: the cathedral has eleven bells and eleven altars, and its staircase is arranged in flights of eleven steps. The town counts eleven historic churches and chapels and eleven fountains, and there is even a clock in town with only eleven hours on its dial. Spotting the elevens is an entertaining way to explore.
The Aare, culture and day trips
The Aare flows slowly past the old town, and its banks are lined with walking paths, terraces and moorings. Boat trips run along the river between Solothurn and Biel, passing the medieval town of Büren an der Aare and wetland reserves rich in birdlife. Solothurn is also a cultural centre for Switzerland, known for its film and literature festivals, which draw audiences from across the country, and for an art museum with notable Swiss works.
- The Weissenstein, Solothurn's home mountain, reached by gondola, with views over the Alps
- A river cruise on the Aare to Biel/Bienne
- The Verena Gorge, a short wooded walk to a hermitage just outside town
- Bern, about half an hour away by motorway
Where to stay and practical tips
Staying in the old town puts the cathedral, the river and restaurants within a few minutes' walk, while hotels near the station are practical for business trips and onward train connections. The town has a strong local industry, including medical technology and precision engineering, so weekday visitors are often in town for meetings. Summer evenings on the river terraces are a highlight; winter brings a quieter, intimate atmosphere and Christmas markets. If your plans include visits in several towns of the region, a chauffeur by the hour, minimum two hours, keeps the day flexible.
