Delémont
Delémont is 202 km from Geneva Airport, about 2 h 25 by road, and the route stays in Switzerland throughout. The capital of the canton of Jura, the youngest canton in the country, is a small, friendly town with a well-kept old centre of fountains and gates, set in a broad valley among wooded hills. AirportsTransfers.ch offers a direct ride from Geneva arrivals to Delémont or anywhere else in the Jura.
- Distance from GVA: 202 km by road
- Drive time: about 2 h 25
- Border crossing: none
- Best for: a calm Jura base, history, horses and nature
- Getting there: via Neuchâtel, Biel/Bienne and the A16 Transjurane
Getting there from Geneva Airport
The route follows the A1 north-east via Lausanne to Yverdon-les-Bains, then the A5 along the shores of Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Biel. At Biel/Bienne it joins the A16 Transjurane, a motorway that threads through the Jura ranges in a succession of tunnels and gorges, past Moutier, before opening onto the Delémont valley. The engineering of the Transjurane is impressive in itself, and it has shortened the journey considerably compared with the old winding roads.
Winter can bring snow to the Jura, though the motorway and its tunnels are kept clear. Winter tyres remain a sensible precaution between November and March, especially if you plan to continue into the Franches-Montagnes, which sit higher than the valley.
The youngest canton and its capital
The canton of Jura came into being in 1979, after a long political movement for autonomy from the canton of Bern, and Delémont became its capital. The town carries this history with quiet pride, and you will see the canton's red and white flag with its bishop's crozier throughout the region. Despite its administrative role, Delémont remains a human-scale place where the pace is relaxed and the old town is easy to explore on foot in a morning.
The historic centre is enclosed by old gates and lined with eighteenth-century houses and painted fountains topped with statues. The château, built as a summer residence for the prince-bishops of Basel, stands at one end of the old town with its formal façade and gardens. The Jura museum of art and history, in a patrician house nearby, presents the region's past from prehistory to the creation of the canton.
Around Delémont: chapels, gorges and horses
On the edge of town, a short walk through the woods leads to the Vorbourg chapel, a pilgrimage chapel perched on a rocky outcrop above a gorge, with the ruins of a castle nearby. Beyond the valley, the high plateau of the Franches-Montagnes is famous for its horses, a breed that bears the plateau's name and can be seen grazing in open wood-pastures dotted with spruce trees. The plateau's main town, Saignelégier, is known for its annual horse show, and the area is a favourite with walkers, riders and cross-country skiers.

Food and the Jura way of life
The Jura has a strong gastronomic identity. Tête de Moine, the cheese shaved into delicate rosettes with a special tool, originates from the former abbey of Bellelay, not far from Delémont. Other local products include damassine plum brandy from the Ajoie, smoked sausages and hearty dishes served in farm inns on the plateaus. In autumn, many villages hold the Saint-Martin feast, celebrating rich traditional cooking.
Practical tips
Delémont has a small choice of hotels, and visitors exploring the wider region sometimes stay in Saint-Ursanne or in farm guesthouses in the Franches-Montagnes. The town is well placed for business trips in both the Jura and the Basel region, and its proximity to France and Germany makes it a practical meeting point. For a programme that includes several sites in the canton, a chauffeur by the hour, minimum two hours, avoids sparse local transport connections.
