Getting to Evolène from Geneva Airport

The route runs along Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux, then up the Rhône valley via Martigny to Sion. From Sion a road climbs south to Vex and enters the Val d'Hérens, following the valley through small villages. Along the way you pass the earth pyramids of Euseigne, tall columns of eroded moraine topped by boulders, which even in winter are a striking sight from the road. The valley then opens out at Evolène, with the summit of the Dent Blanche visible at its head on a clear day. The road is well maintained in winter, but snow can make the final kilometres slower, and chains may occasionally be needed. Expect about two hours in normal conditions.

Skiing around Evolène

Evolène is not a big-resort destination, and that is precisely its appeal. The local lift-served skiing is modest, with gentle slopes that suit families, children and beginners, and a calm, uncrowded rhythm. Further up the valley, beyond Les Haudères, the hamlet of Arolla has a small, high ski area and is one of the classic ski touring bases of the Swiss Alps, on the route of the famous Haute Route between Chamonix and Zermatt. For lift-served variety, the 4 Vallées slopes above Thyon and Veysonnaz are within reach by car, making it easy to combine a peaceful base with a few days on a large network. Ski touring and off-piste around Arolla are high-mountain activities: go with a qualified guide and check avalanche conditions daily.

Cross-country skiing and winter walks

The valley floor between Evolène, Les Haudères and Arolla offers some of the most scenic cross-country skiing in the Valais, with tracks winding through larch forests and open meadows below the peaks. Both classic and skating styles are catered for on prepared tracks. Snowshoe trails and winter walking paths are marked around the villages, and the quiet, the light and the views make them a pleasure even for non-skiers. Evenings are calm, with a few restaurants serving Valais specialities such as raclette.

The village and its traditions

Evolène is one of the best-preserved villages in the Valais. Its main street is lined with tall wooden houses darkened by the sun, some decorated with flower boxes in summer, and the village keeps traditions alive, including traditional costumes worn on special occasions. The Val d'Hérens is also known for its black Hérens cattle, famous for their cow-fighting contests in spring and summer. Accommodation is mostly in chalets, apartments and small family hotels. For a wider choice of shops, Sion is an easy drive back down the valley.

When to go and practical tips

The winter season runs from around Christmas to March, with ski touring continuing into spring at higher altitudes. January and February bring the coldest temperatures and the best cross-country conditions, while March is ideal for touring with longer, warmer days. Saturdays are busier on the motorway along Lake Geneva and in the Rhône valley, so arrive midweek if possible. Pack warm layers for cold valley mornings, and tell your transfer company about touring kit and cross-country skis as well as alpine skis, as they take up space. Self-caterers may want to stock up in Sion on the way in.
