Driving from Geneva Airport to Zinal
The motorway takes you past Lausanne and Montreux, then up the Rhône valley through Martigny and Sion to Sierre, where the language begins to shift towards German. At Sierre you turn south into the Val d'Anniviers. The road climbs in a series of bends above the Navizence gorge to Vissoie, the main crossroads of the valley, and then continues up to Zinal, where it ends among larch forest beneath high peaks.
The valley road is open all winter and kept clear, but it is narrow in places and slow after snowfall, so the last part of the journey takes longer than its distance suggests. Snow chains are sometimes necessary; our chauffeurs know the road and carry them when needed. Travelling by public transport means a train to Sierre and a post bus up the valley, often with a change, which is manageable for light travellers but awkward with a family and ski bags.
The Grimentz-Zinal ski area
Zinal's skiing is mostly found on the Sorebois slopes, reached by a large cable car that rises from the village. Since a cable car was built across the ridge to Grimentz, the two resorts form a single ski area, Grimentz-Zinal, giving a good variety of terrain across two sides of the mountain.
Zinal's side is generally considered the more challenging, with steep, open slopes and a reputation for high-quality off-piste after fresh snow. Intermediates will enjoy the long red runs and the reliable snow that comes with altitude, while beginners have a small area but may find Grimentz's gentler slopes more suitable for progress. The run back down into Zinal at the end of the day is a demanding one, and some skiers prefer to ride the cable car down. Anyone going off-piste should go with a qualified guide.
The village and the Imperial Crown
Zinal is a small, unpretentious resort with a mix of old wooden chalets and newer buildings, set where the valley closes in beneath a ring of famous summits. The mountains visible from the Val d'Anniviers, including the Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Ober Gabelhorn, Matterhorn and Dent Blanche, are known locally as the Imperial Crown, and the views from the upper slopes are a highlight of any stay.
Nightlife is low-key: a few restaurants and bars rather than clubs. The atmosphere suits people who come for the mountains and the snow. Cross-country skiing along the valley floor and winter walks are good options for rest days or non-skiers.
Zinal is also a historic base for mountaineers, and in the warmer months it is the finishing point of a well-known mountain running race that climbs high above the valley. In winter that heritage shows in the number of guides working from the village and in the steady flow of ski tourers heading for the huts above.
When to go and practical tips
The season usually runs from early December to April. Thanks to altitude, Zinal tends to keep good snow conditions throughout, and spring skiing in March can be excellent. February is busiest because of school holidays in Switzerland and abroad.
- Allow for the slower final 30 km up the Val d'Anniviers when planning arrival time.
- Bring cash and essentials: services are limited compared with large resorts.
- Declare all skis and snowboards when you book so we send the right vehicle.
- Saturdays can be busy on the Lake Geneva motorway; plan return times generously.
If your group mixes strong and less confident skiers, look at a map of the linked area before you choose accommodation: staying in Zinal puts you close to the steeper terrain, while beginners may prefer quick access to Grimentz.
Returning to Geneva Airport
For departure day, plan the full drive time plus a buffer of at least 30 to 45 minutes, and aim to be at the airport around two hours before your flight. In fresh snow, the descent of the valley takes longer, and we may suggest an earlier pick-up. Because we operate 24/7, very early or late flights are not a problem.
