How to get to La Toussuire from Geneva Airport

The route enters France just after the airport and follows the motorway south via Annecy towards Albertville or Chambéry, then heads into the Maurienne valley, the long valley that leads to the Fréjus tunnel and Italy. You leave the motorway at Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, the main town of the valley, and take the road that climbs through Fontcouverte to La Toussuire. The climb has a series of bends and wide views back over the valley. It is well maintained, but winter tyres or chains are compulsory on French mountain roads in snowy conditions. In normal traffic the trip takes about two hours, and the Maurienne is usually less congested on Saturdays than the neighbouring Tarentaise.

The ski area: Les Sybelles

Les Sybelles is one of the larger linked ski areas in France, connecting La Toussuire with Le Corbier, Saint-Jean-d'Arves, Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves, Saint-Colomban-des-Villards and Les Bottières. From La Toussuire the slopes spread out across open, rolling terrain with many blue and red runs, ideal for families and intermediates who want variety without too many steep pitches. Higher up, the views towards the jagged Aiguilles d'Arves are a highlight. Stronger skiers can venture further across the area to find steeper runs and off-piste opportunities after snowfall, preferably with a guide. Because the terrain is largely above the trees, visibility can be poor in a storm; on those days, stay closer to the resort and the lower slopes.

The resort and its atmosphere

La Toussuire is a purpose-built resort with a mix of apartment buildings, chalets and holiday residences, many with direct or easy access to the slopes. The village has shops, restaurants, bars and ski hire outlets, and a relaxed, family-oriented atmosphere. Cycling fans may know the name from Tour de France stage finishes, which climbed the same road you take to the resort. Non-skiers can enjoy snowshoe walks, sledging and winter paths across the plateau, and the sunny position makes terraces popular at lunchtime. Evenings are low-key, centred on a few bars and restaurants, which suits families who want early nights before the first lifts.

When to go

The season usually runs from mid-December to early April. January offers quiet slopes and attractive conditions, while February is busy with French school holidays, staggered by zone over several weeks. March is sunny and pleasant, though the south-facing slopes soften in the afternoon; plan accordingly. Christmas and New Year are popular, so it is best to book accommodation and transfers early. For snow conditions, the higher parts of Les Sybelles usually hold up well later in the season.

Practical tips

Although the Maurienne is less congested than the Tarentaise, Saturday traffic can still slow the motorway around Annecy and Chambéry. Leaving Geneva early or arriving on another day makes for a smoother journey. Pack good goggles for flat light and sun cream for bright days on the plateau. If you are staying in Le Corbier or another Sybelles village, make sure you give the right name when booking, as the access roads differ. Declare skis and boards at booking so that the vehicle has enough room.

  • Start on the gentle slopes near the village before exploring further.
  • Check last-lift times when skiing far across Les Sybelles.
  • Allow a margin on the way back to Geneva Airport.
