The route from Geneva Airport to Tignes
After crossing into France, the route follows the motorway past Annecy to Albertville, then the dual carriageway up the Tarentaise valley to Moûtiers. Beyond Moûtiers the road continues up the valley to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, the last town before the high resorts. From there it climbs through Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise and a series of tunnels and bends, passes the impressive Chevril dam and its lake, and reaches Tignes. This upper section is a serious mountain road, and winter tyres or chains are compulsory in snow. On Saturdays in high season, traffic around Albertville, Moûtiers and Bourg-Saint-Maurice can add considerable time, so arriving early in the day or on another day of the week pays off.
The ski area: glacier, high bowls and a famous neighbour
Tignes is high, open and snow-sure. Its slopes rise above the lake towards the Grande Motte glacier, reached by an underground funicular, and offer a long season that often extends well into spring. The terrain is varied: wide, cruising pistes for intermediates, steep and challenging runs for experts, and a vast amount of off-piste terrain that is best tackled with a qualified guide. Over the ridge, the slopes connect with Val d'Isère, whose terrain adds further variety and a different atmosphere. Together they make up a large linked area that keeps strong skiers busy for a week and more. Beginners are well catered for with gentle areas near the villages, but the real draw is the high-altitude terrain.
Choosing a village in Tignes
Tignes is made up of several villages at different altitudes. Tignes le Lac, set beside the lake, is the central hub with shops and lifts in all directions; Le Lavachet is close by, and Val Claret, at the far end of the lake, gives quick access to the Grande Motte and to Val d'Isère. Lower down, Tignes les Boisses and Tignes les Brévières are quieter, more wooded and traditional in feel, with slopes linking them to the upper resort. The original village of Tignes was submerged when the Chevril dam was built in the 1950s, a story that still shapes local memory. When booking a transfer, say which village you are staying in, as the distances between them are significant.
When to go
Thanks to its altitude, Tignes usually opens earlier and closes later than most resorts, with skiing often possible from late autumn to late spring. January is cold and quiet, February busy with school holidays, and March and April offer long days and spring snow. Early-season and late-season visitors should bear in mind that conditions are concentrated on the higher slopes, which is exactly where Tignes excels. Weather at this height can change quickly: in a storm, the lower wooded runs near Les Brévières are a useful refuge.
Practical tips
The altitude means cold mornings, strong sun and sometimes flat light, so pack good goggles, warm layers and high-factor sun cream. Some visitors feel tired or short of breath on the first evening; drink plenty of water and take it easy on arrival day. Saturday traffic in the Tarentaise is notorious, and the return journey to Geneva can take much longer than usual, so allow a generous margin before your flight. Declare all skis and boards when you book, and if your group has a lot of luggage, consider the van or minibus rather than two separate cars.
