Valmorel
Valmorel is about 174 km from Geneva Airport, roughly two hours and five minutes by road, with a border crossing into France at the start of the trip. Built in the 1970s in a traditional Savoyard style, the resort has a car-free main street and shares the Grand Domaine ski area with Saint-François-Longchamp on the other side of the Col de la Madeleine. AirportsTransfers.ch takes you to the resort's drop-off point, where your apartment or chalet is a short walk away.

How to reach Valmorel from Geneva Airport
The route crosses into France just after the airport and follows the motorway past Annecy to Albertville, the town that hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics. From Albertville the dual carriageway heads up the Tarentaise valley towards Moûtiers, but you leave it earlier, around Aigueblanche, and take the road that climbs the side valley through Les Avanchers to Valmorel. This is an advantage on busy Saturdays, as you avoid the worst of the Moûtiers bottleneck that affects resorts further up the valley. The final climb is winding but not particularly long. As everywhere in the French Alps in winter, winter tyres or chains are compulsory on mountain roads, and conditions can change quickly in a snowstorm.
The ski area: the Grand Domaine
Valmorel's own slopes are varied, with plenty of tree-lined runs that make it a good choice in poor visibility, and a network of easy routes that link the resort's hamlets. Higher lifts lead towards the Col de la Madeleine, where you can cross to the Saint-François-Longchamp side, with its wide, sunny slopes. Together they form a large linked area that offers enough variety for a full week, including steeper reds and blacks for experienced skiers and good off-piste after snowfall, best explored with a guide. For families, the big attraction is that children and adults can all find suitable terrain close to the village, and that many accommodation blocks are on or near the slopes.
The village: Savoyard style without cars
Valmorel is often cited as an early example of a purpose-built resort designed to look like a traditional mountain village, with stone and wood buildings and slate-style roofs. The heart of the resort, Bourg-Morel, is a pedestrian street lined with shops, restaurants and bars, while several hamlets of apartments and chalets are spread across the hillside, linked by pistes and small lifts. Cars are left at the resort entrance or in car parks, which makes the village safe and quiet for children. When you book a transfer, give the name of your hamlet and building so the driver can drop you at the closest point.
Best time to go
The season typically runs from mid-December to early April. January is a good choice for quiet slopes and good value, while February is busy with French school holidays, which are staggered by region over about four weeks. The tree-lined lower runs make Valmorel pleasant even in snowy weather, and in March the longer days are ideal for crossing to Saint-François-Longchamp and back. Christmas and New Year weeks book up early, as do airport transfers, so it pays to plan ahead.
Practical tips
Changeover day in the Tarentaise is usually Saturday, and traffic between Geneva and Albertville can be heavy from late morning onwards. Leaving early or travelling on another day makes a big difference to journey times. Pack for both sunny and snowy days, and bring a small day bag with essentials so you are not digging through suitcases on arrival. Children's ski lessons, equipment hire and lift passes are often best booked in advance in high season. Remember that the village is car-free: keep luggage to what you can comfortably carry the last few metres from the drop-off.
