  • Best for: confident intermediates, families and sporty skiers who like a fast home run

Driving from Geneva Airport to Veysonnaz

The route follows the motorway around Lake Geneva via Lausanne and Montreux, then runs up the broad Rhône valley past Martigny towards Sion, the capital of the Valais. Near Sion you leave the motorway and take the road that climbs the southern flank of the valley through small villages and vineyards, then forests, to Veysonnaz. The climb is short compared with many resorts and the road is well kept, but it is steep and winding, so snow tyres are essential and chains are sometimes needed after heavy falls. In normal conditions the full journey takes just under two hours, making Veysonnaz one of the more accessible 4 Vallées bases from Geneva.

The slopes: from the Piste de l'Ours to the 4 Vallées

Veysonnaz is best known for the Piste de l'Ours, a long, steep run that has hosted World Cup races and drops all the way back towards the village. Strong skiers love it first thing in the morning on fresh corduroy. From the village a gondola climbs towards Thyon, where wide, sunny slopes suit intermediates, and from there the network extends to Nendaz, Siviez and on to Verbier and the high ground around Mont-Fort. This means you can choose between relaxed local days and long expeditions across the whole area. Beginners have gentler terrain around Thyon, while experienced skiers will find plenty of reds and blacks, plus off-piste terrain best explored with a guide.

The village and where to stay

The old village of Veysonnaz, with its church, chalets and barns, sits a little below the main ski infrastructure, which is grouped around the gondola station and the Mayens-de-l'Ours area. Accommodation is mainly in chalets and apartments, with a few hotels; staying near the gondola keeps morning logistics simple. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed rather than glitzy, with a handful of restaurants and bars. Sion is close by in the valley for a wider choice of shops, restaurants and services.

Best time to go

The season normally runs from December to April. January often brings crisp, quiet days, while February is busy with Swiss and international school holidays. March offers longer, sunnier days and still good snow on the higher slopes of the 4 Vallées. Because the lower part of the World Cup run can soften in spring sunshine, plan to ski it early in the day later in the season. If you are a mixed group, Veysonnaz works well at any time: experts head for the big runs while others enjoy the gentler terrain around Thyon. Around Christmas and New Year the village fills up quickly and transfers are in high demand, so it is wise to book your airport journey at the same time as your accommodation. Late-season weekends, on the other hand, can be pleasantly calm, with sunny terraces and short lift queues.

Practical tips for your trip

Saturday is the main changeover day in the Valais, and motorway traffic around Lausanne and in the Rhône valley increases from late morning. Arriving mid-week or early in the day makes for a smoother transfer. Bring skis in proper bags and let your transfer provider know the exact number so the right vehicle is sent. Sion, the valley capital, is worth an afternoon off: its two hilltop castles, Valère and Tourbillon, overlook the old town and make a fine rest-day outing.

  • Book the first gondola if you want the World Cup run to yourself.
  • Check last-lift times when skiing over to Nendaz or Verbier.
  • Keep a small bag with warm clothes and essentials easy to reach on arrival day.
