Getting to Nendaz from Geneva Airport
The route follows the motorway along Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux and into the Rhône valley. You pass Martigny and continue towards Sion, then leave the motorway and take the road that climbs above the valley through vineyards and small villages to Haute-Nendaz. The ascent is relatively short and offers wide views over the Rhône valley and the Bernese Alps. In normal traffic the journey takes about two hours. As always in the Valais in winter, the mountain section can be slowed by snow, and chains may occasionally be needed, so a vehicle equipped and driven for these conditions is a sensible choice.
The ski area: Tracouet, Siviez and Mont-Fort
Directly above the village, the Tracouet sector offers sunny, gentle slopes and a small lake area that make it a favourite with families and beginners. From Nendaz a gondola links to Siviez, the crossroads of the 4 Vallées, from which you can head towards Thyon and Veysonnaz on one side or Verbier on the other. Above Siviez, the Tortin sector and the lifts to Mont-Fort reach the highest skiing in the area, with glacier views and some famously steep terrain, including mogul runs that test strong skiers. Off-piste options are extensive but demanding; go with a qualified guide. The combination of a calm family zone right above the village and access to big, high terrain is what makes Nendaz so popular with mixed groups.
The village: a balcony above the Rhône
Haute-Nendaz is a sizeable resort with a mix of chalets, apartment buildings and hotels, spread along the slope and served by shops, restaurants and a sports centre. Its south-facing position gives it long hours of sunshine and a striking view across the valley. The village keeps a Valais character, and Nendaz is known for its bisses, historic irrigation channels that run along the mountainside; some of the paths beside them are used for winter walks and snowshoe outings. Siviez, the smaller lift hub further up, is an alternative base for those who want to be closer to the high slopes.
When to go
The 4 Vallées season usually runs from December to April, with the high Mont-Fort area often holding good snow late into spring. January is ideal for quieter slopes, while February brings Swiss and European school holidays and busier lifts. In March the long, sunny days are perfect for exploring the whole network, though the lower, south-facing runs near the village soften in the afternoon. Christmas and New Year are busy and transfers should be booked early.
Practical tips
Saturday is the main changeover day, and traffic builds on the motorway along Lake Geneva and in the Rhône valley from late morning. Plan accordingly if you have a tight connection on the way home. Bring good sun protection and goggles for flat light at altitude, and keep layers handy, as the high slopes around Mont-Fort can be much colder than the village. When skiing far across the 4 Vallées, keep track of last-lift times so you do not end up on the wrong side of a ridge. Sion, with its castles and old town, makes an easy and rewarding rest-day excursion.
- Families: start on Tracouet before heading to Siviez.
- Experts: take the early lifts to Mont-Fort for the best snow.
- Everyone: note the location of your accommodation relative to the gondola.
