Chamrousse
Chamrousse is about 173 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of just over two hours that crosses the border into France. The resort sits high in the Belledonne range directly above Grenoble and hosted the alpine skiing events of the 1968 Winter Olympics, a heritage it still celebrates. AirportsTransfers.ch takes you from the arrivals hall up the mountain road to your accommodation in either of the resort's two main bases.

The route from Geneva Airport
The journey begins by crossing into France and following the motorway south past Annecy towards Chambéry. From Chambéry the motorway continues down the broad Grésivaudan valley to Grenoble, the largest city of the French Alps. Before reaching the city centre you turn off towards Uriage-les-Bains, a small spa town at the foot of the Belledonne, and from there the road climbs through forest to Chamrousse. The final ascent is a classic mountain road with plenty of bends; it is well maintained, but winter tyres or chains are compulsory in snowy conditions. In normal traffic the whole trip takes just over two hours, which makes Chamrousse a realistic option even for a long weekend from Geneva.
The ski area: Olympic history and wide views
Chamrousse's slopes spread across the upper part of the mountain, culminating near the Croix de Chamrousse, from where the view takes in Grenoble far below, the cliffs of the Vercors and Chartreuse and, on clear days, Mont Blanc in the distance. It was on these slopes that Jean-Claude Killy won his Olympic gold medals in 1968, and the resort still takes pride in that history. The area offers a balanced mix of easy, intermediate and steeper terrain, with tree-lined runs lower down that are useful in poor visibility and more open slopes higher up. Freeriders will find interesting lines after fresh snow, ideally with a guide. Because the resort is so close to Grenoble, it is one of the city's favourite ski areas, which shapes its rhythm: weekdays are much quieter than weekends.
Recoin and Roche-Béranger: choosing your base
Chamrousse is made up of two main sectors connected by the slopes and by road. Recoin, the higher of the two, is the historic Olympic base and has a lively centre close to the main lifts. Roche-Béranger, a little lower and set among the trees, has a calmer, more residential feel, appreciated by families. Accommodation is mostly apartments and chalets, with some hotels and holiday residences. Above the resort, the Lacs Robert, small mountain lakes beneath the summit ridge, are a well-known destination for ski tourers and snowshoers, and a Nordic area on the plateau offers cross-country skiing and gentle walks.
When to go
The main season usually runs from mid-December to the end of March or early April. January offers good conditions and excellent value outside holidays, while February brings French school holidays and busier slopes. Since Chamrousse is a short drive from a large city, weekends, especially sunny Saturdays and Sundays, attract many day visitors, so a midweek arrival and departure is often more pleasant. In spring the sunny slopes soften by midday, so plan to ski early and enjoy a long lunch with a view over the valley.
Practical tips and day trips
Saturdays bring changeover traffic and day visitors at the same time, and the motorway around Chambéry and Grenoble can be slow. Bring sun protection, as the resort catches a lot of light, and a warm layer for windy summit runs. If you have a rest day, Grenoble itself is well worth a visit: the cable car up to the Bastille fortress, with its striking bubble cabins, offers a superb view over the city and the surrounding mountains, and the old town has a good choice of cafés and museums. A chauffeur by the hour, with a minimum of two hours, is a simple way to combine a city visit with a shopping stop on the way back up.
