The journey from Geneva Airport
The route starts along Lake Geneva towards Lausanne, then heads into the canton of Fribourg towards Bulle. From there it follows the valleys through the Gruyère region and the Pays-d'Enhaut to Saanen, then climbs over the Saanenmöser plateau and descends to Zweisimmen. At Zweisimmen you turn up the Simmental and follow it to its end at Lenk. The drive is scenic throughout, with a shift from French- to German-speaking Switzerland around Saanen. Snow is most likely on the stretch over the plateau and in the upper valley, so allow a little extra time in unsettled weather.
The ski area: Adelboden-Lenk and the Betelberg
Lenk has two distinct sides. On one side of the valley, lifts climb towards the Metsch and Hahnenmoos area, where the slopes connect with Adelboden to form the large Adelboden-Lenk ski area. The terrain here is varied, with long cruising runs, some steeper descents and a mix of open and wooded slopes. Adelboden is well known for hosting a men's World Cup race, which gives an idea of the more demanding terrain available. On the other side of the valley, the Betelberg offers gentler, quieter skiing with wide views, popular with families and with those who like a more relaxed pace. Having both sides gives you flexibility in different weather: the more sheltered runs are useful on windy days.
The village and the upper Simmental
Lenk is a traditional Bernese Oberland village with wooden chalets, a pedestrian-friendly centre and a strong local identity. It has long been known as a spa village thanks to its sulphur springs, and it keeps a calm, welcoming atmosphere. At the head of the valley, the Simmenfälle waterfalls and the walls of the Wildstrubel massif form a dramatic backdrop. The flat valley floor is ideal for cross-country skiing, with trails that run through meadows and along the river. Accommodation ranges from hotels to chalets and holiday apartments, many close to the lifts or connected by local buses.
When to go
The season usually runs from December to March or early April. January is often the quietest month, with good snow and plenty of space on the slopes, while February is busy with Swiss school holidays. March brings longer days, which suit long tours across to Adelboden. Note that the World Cup weekend in Adelboden attracts large crowds to the area; if you prefer calm, check the race weekend before you fix your dates. Early-season skiing depends on natural snowfall, as the valley floor is relatively low, so if you are travelling before Christmas it is worth keeping an eye on reports and having a flexible plan. Late March can be lovely on the higher Adelboden-Lenk slopes, with cold mornings and soft afternoon snow.
Practical tips
Saturday is changeover day, and traffic builds on the motorway towards Lausanne and in the valley towns in the late morning. Winter tyres are standard on transfer vehicles, and chains may be needed in heavy snow. Bring a range of layers, as the valley floor can be cold and shaded while the upper slopes are sunny. Tell your transfer provider about skis, snowboards and cross-country equipment so the right vehicle is sent. If you plan to visit Gstaad or other Saanenland villages during your stay, a chauffeur by the hour, booked for at least two hours, can save you the hassle of driving on snowy roads.
- Choose accommodation near the lift for the side of the valley you plan to ski most.
- Check last-lift times when skiing over to Adelboden.
- Allow a comfortable margin on the return trip to Geneva Airport.
