Moûtiers

Moûtiers is 124 km from Geneva Airport, about 1 hour 50 minutes by car south through Haute-Savoie and Savoie into the Tarentaise valley, France. It is a small historic town at the junction of the valleys leading to Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens and Les Menuires, the resorts of Les 3 Vallées. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you there or straight up to your resort, avoiding a change at the station.

  • Distance from GVA: 124 km
  • Drive time: about 1 h 50
  • Border crossing: yes, the route crosses into France
  • Best for: skiers heading to Les 3 Vallées, spa visitors, history
  • Getting there: motorway south past Annecy, then the N90 from Albertville

From Geneva Airport to Moûtiers

The route leaves Geneva southwards and takes the motorway past Annecy, then continues towards Albertville. From Albertville the N90 dual carriageway follows the Isère river up the Tarentaise valley to Moûtiers. The journey is straightforward most of the year, but on winter Saturdays, when tens of thousands of skiers arrive and leave the resorts, traffic between Albertville and Moûtiers can be very heavy. Leaving early or travelling on another day makes a big difference.

Moûtiers is a major railway station for the ski resorts, and in winter many travellers arrive by train before taking a bus or taxi up to the resorts. From Geneva Airport, however, the rail journey involves several changes, so most visitors choose a direct road transfer.

The town

Moûtiers was for centuries the seat of the archbishops of the Tarentaise, and the Saint-Pierre cathedral, with its Romanesque origins, is the main historical monument. The archbishop's palace now houses a museum of the history and traditions of the Tarentaise. The town is compact, set in a narrow valley, and serves as a commercial and administrative centre for the surrounding villages and resorts. Shops, supermarkets and restaurants are useful for travellers stocking up before heading to their chalet.

Accommodation in Moûtiers itself is limited and mostly practical, used by seasonal workers, business visitors and travellers who prefer valley prices to resort prices. Some skiers choose to stay in the town or in nearby villages and drive up each day, though in high season the daily commute and parking in the resorts can be demanding. For most holidaymakers the town is a waypoint rather than a destination, but it rewards a short stop: the old bridge over the Isère, the cathedral and the narrow streets of the centre give a sense of the valley's long history before the ski era.

Gateway to Les 3 Vallées

From Moûtiers, roads climb to the resorts of Les 3 Vallées, one of the largest linked ski areas in the world. Courchevel is reached via Saint-Bon, Méribel via the Doron des Allues valley, and Val Thorens and Les Menuires via the Belleville valley. Each climb typically takes from half an hour to an hour, depending on the resort and conditions. In heavy snow, chains may be required on the final sections, so it is worth knowing your accommodation address precisely when booking your transfer.

In summer, the same valleys offer hiking, mountain biking and access to the Vanoise National Park, France's first national park, with glaciers, lakes and wildlife such as ibex and chamois.

Spas around Moûtiers

  • Brides-les-Bains: a spa village known for weight-loss cures, linked by gondola to Méribel
  • Salins-les-Thermes: a thermal spa with salt water springs, right next to Moûtiers
  • La Léchère: a spa town further down the valley

These thermal resorts make the area interesting for visitors outside the ski season, and Brides-les-Bains is also a quieter base for skiers wanting access to the 3 Vallées via the gondola.

Practical tips

For winter travel, avoid Saturdays if you can, or start very early. Make sure the vehicle you book has enough room for skis and boots. Families should request child seats when booking and plan breaks on the way, for example around Annecy or Albertville. In summer, the valley is calmer, and Moûtiers is a good stop on the way to the Vanoise or the Italian border via the Little St Bernard Pass.
