Gruyères
Gruyères is 119 km from Geneva Airport, about 1 hour 20 minutes by car via the A1, A9 and A12 motorways, all within Switzerland. This small medieval town perched on a green hill in the canton of Fribourg is one of the most visited places in the country, with its castle, cobbled main street and the cheese that bears its region's name. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you to the foot of the old town, or to your hotel in the surrounding villages.

From Geneva Airport to Gruyères
The car follows Lake Geneva on the A1 to Lausanne, takes the A9 and then the A12 through the hills towards Bulle, leaving the motorway at the Bulle exit for the last few kilometres to Gruyères. The approach offers a fine view of the town on its hill, with the Moléson mountain behind. The old town itself is car-free: vehicles stop at the car parks just below the walls, from where it is a short walk up the hill. If you are staying in the town, your driver will take you as close as access allows.
By public transport, Gruyères has a small station in the valley below, reached with several changes from the airport, followed by a walk or bus up the hill. With luggage, this is tiring, so a direct transfer is the easier choice for most visitors.
The castle and the medieval town
The Château de Gruyères dominates the hill. Built in the thirteenth century, it was the seat of the Counts of Gruyère for centuries before passing to the canton of Fribourg, and later belonged to families of artists and patrons who restored it. Today it is a museum where you can visit furnished rooms, a knights' hall and the gardens, with views across the Pre-Alps. A multimedia show tells the story of the county and its legends.
The main street of the town, lined with old houses, fountains and restaurant terraces, slopes gently up to the castle. It is lovely early in the morning or in the late afternoon, when day visitors have left. The town also houses the HR Giger Museum, dedicated to the Swiss artist famous for designing the creature in the film Alien, and a striking bar decorated in his biomechanical style opposite the museum. The contrast with the medieval setting is surprising and memorable.
Cheese and chocolate
At the foot of the hill, a demonstration dairy shows how Gruyère cheese is made, with viewing windows over the production area and an exhibition on the history and taste of this famous cheese. Restaurants in the town serve fondue moitié-moitié, raclette and the famous Gruyère double cream with meringues. A few minutes away, the village of Broc is home to a historic chocolate factory with a visitor centre, and combining cheese and chocolate in one day is a popular plan for families.
Moléson and the surroundings
Moléson-sur-Gruyères, at the foot of the Moléson mountain, offers a funicular and cable car to the summit, with a view stretching from Lake Geneva to the Bernese Alps on clear days. In summer, hiking trails, an alpine cheese-making demonstration and mountain carts attract visitors; in winter, a small family ski area operates. Lac de la Gruyère, a long lake in the valley, is ideal for gentle walks and cycling.
- Bulle: the regional capital, with its museum and markets
- Charmey: a village with thermal baths and a cable car
- Fribourg: a medieval city with a Gothic cathedral
- Montreux: on Lake Geneva, reached over the hills
Practical tips
Gruyères is very busy at weekends and in summer, so arrive early or plan an overnight stay to enjoy the town in calmer moments. Accommodation in the old town is limited to a few small hotels; more options exist in Bulle and nearby villages. Comfortable shoes are important for the cobblestones and the climb. For a day trip from Geneva, a chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) can combine Gruyères, Broc and Moléson without the hassle of parking.
