Getting there with children
The route follows the motorway along Lake Geneva to Lausanne, then heads inland towards Fribourg before branching off to Bulle. From there, a short regional road passes beneath the medieval town of Gruyères and climbs gently to Moléson-sur-Gruyères at the foot of the mountain. The final stretch has few hairpins, so it is an easy approach for children who dislike winding mountain roads.
There is no border to cross, and traffic is generally lighter than on routes to the big Alpine resorts, although the lakeside motorway near Lausanne can be busy at peak times. Tell us the age or weight of each child at booking and suitable seats will be in the vehicle.
Why Moléson suits young families
Moléson is a compact resort with a village at the base and slopes spread across the mountain above. A funicular climbs from the village to the mid-station at Plan-Francey, where beginners and children find gentle terrain, and a cable car continues to the summit. Riding the funicular is a treat for many children and saves them carrying skis up the slope.
The pistes are mainly easy and intermediate, and the scale of the area means families can stay together. It is ideal for a first ski holiday, a long weekend or a few days of skiing combined with sightseeing. Families looking for long runs and high-altitude snow would be better served by a larger Alpine resort; Moléson's charm is its simplicity and its setting.
On a clear day, the view from the summit is remarkable, stretching across the Swiss plateau to the Jura and, in the other direction, over Lake Geneva to the Alps. Even children who do not ski can ride up with their parents to enjoy it.
Because Moléson sits in the Prealps, snow cover varies from one winter to another. It is wise to check conditions before travelling and to be ready to switch to winter walks, sledging or sightseeing on days when the snow is thin.
Lessons and first runs
A ski school operates in the resort with lessons for children, usually on the gentle slopes near Plan-Francey. Short morning sessions work well for small children, leaving the afternoon for sledging or an outing. During Swiss school sports holidays in February, book lessons in advance.
For families with toddlers, the snow around the mid-station and the village is perfect for play, and the whole family can meet for lunch without long journeys between lifts.
Rest days in Gruyère
- Gruyères: the walled hilltop town and its castle, a short drive away, feel like stepping into a storybook.
- Alpine cheese making: the village has a traditional dairy where cheese is made over a wood fire, and a modern demonstration dairy stands at the foot of Gruyères.
- Chocolate: a historic chocolate factory in nearby Broc welcomes visitors.
- Snowshoeing and sledging: marked trails and gentle slopes around Moléson.
Packing and planning the arrival day
Pack warm, waterproof clothing for each child, with spare gloves, hats, goggles and sun cream. The summit can be windy, so a neck warmer and an extra layer are useful. Equipment hire is available locally, which saves carrying children's skis. If you bring skis, snowboards or a sledge, declare them at booking.
Thanks to the moderate drive, a morning flight can leave time for a visit to Gruyères on arrival day. Collect hire equipment before dinner and keep the evening simple, ideally with a cheese fondue, the local speciality and a favourite with most children. In snowy weather, your chauffeur carries winter equipment and adapts the pace.
