Getting there with children
The route follows the motorway along Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux, then up the Rhône valley past Martigny towards Sion. Shortly after Martigny, the road leaves the motorway and climbs through vineyards and villages to Ovronnaz. The climb has a number of bends, so prepare children who feel unwell on winding roads with a snack and fresh air, and ask for a short stop if needed.
The route stays in Switzerland, and the motorway section is fast in normal conditions. Saturdays in high season bring more traffic, particularly around Lausanne. Give the ages of your children at booking so suitable seats are fitted.
Why Ovronnaz suits families
Ovronnaz is a resort of manageable size. Its ski area spreads above the village, with gentle and intermediate runs that suit beginners and children who are gaining confidence. The scale means parents can keep track of everyone and children can ski the same runs several times to build skill. It is not the place for experts looking for big terrain, but for a calm family week it is very appealing.
The resort faces south, over the Rhône valley towards the mountains on the opposite side, so it enjoys plenty of sunshine. On clear days the panorama is broad and memorable. The village has a relaxed atmosphere, with chalets and apartments spread across the terrace.
The big extra is the thermal baths for which Ovronnaz is well known. Warm outdoor pools with mountain views are a perfect way to end a day on the slopes, and they give families an easy plan for a rest day or a snowy afternoon. Children who have had enough of skiing are rarely unhappy to go swimming.
That combination also suits mixed groups. Grandparents who do not ski can spend the day at the baths or walking on cleared paths, while parents take the children to the slopes, and everyone meets again in the late afternoon. For families with a baby and an older child, the short distances in the resort make it easier for one parent to return to the apartment at nap time without losing half a day.
Families sometimes worry about the drive into Valais, but the route is almost entirely motorway, and only the final section above the valley is a mountain road. In good conditions the whole trip is shorter than many transfers to the large French resorts.
Lessons and first runs
A ski school in Ovronnaz offers lessons for children, with beginner areas near the base. For the youngest, combining a short lesson with snow play and an afternoon swim keeps everyone happy. In February, during Swiss school sports holidays, lessons should be booked ahead.
Snow conditions vary over a season, with the most reliable cover generally from early January to early March. Outside the school holidays, the slopes are quiet, which is ideal for children learning.
Rest-day ideas
- Thermal baths: indoor and outdoor pools in the resort.
- Snowshoeing: marked trails through forest and meadows above the village.
- Sledging: gentle slopes for younger children.
- Valais towns: Sion, with its two hilltop castles, and Martigny are both within easy reach.
Packing and arrival-day planning
Pack warm, waterproof layers, spare gloves and hats, sun cream and goggles for each child, and do not forget swimwear for the thermal baths. Equipment can be hired in the resort, so you need not bring children's skis. If you bring your own skis or snowboards, declare them when booking.
Plan to arrive in daylight so you can settle in and collect equipment. The road up from the valley is cleared in winter, and your chauffeur carries winter equipment and adapts to conditions after snowfall. A swim on arrival evening is a lovely way to unwind after the journey.
