The road from Geneva Airport to Ovronnaz
The car leaves the airport on the A1 towards Lausanne and continues on the A9 along the Lavaux terraces and through the Rhône valley, past Saint-Maurice and Martigny. A little beyond Martigny, between there and Sion, you leave the motorway and cross the valley floor to Leytron. From there a road climbs through terraced vineyards and then forest to Ovronnaz, which sits on a sunny, south-east facing slope with a wide view over the valley.
It is a straightforward route by mountain standards, with most of the distance on motorway. The final climb is well maintained but includes bends, and snow is common in midwinter; winter tyres are used and chains are carried on a professional transfer. The Rhône valley is also served by rail to Riddes or Martigny, but the last section to the village requires a bus or taxi.
The ski area: relaxed, sunny slopes
Ovronnaz has a modest ski area served by a chairlift and a few drag lifts, rising from the edge of the village towards Jorasse and the slopes below the Grand Chavalard. The runs are mainly blue and red, open and sunny, with good views across the Rhône valley to the peaks on the other side. It is an ideal setting for beginners, children and intermediates who prefer quiet pistes to big lift networks.
Experts will find a few steeper pitches and off-piste options nearby after fresh snowfall, but most strong skiers use Ovronnaz as a calm base and visit the large resorts nearby for a day, such as Verbier and Les 4 Vallées, reachable by road via Martigny and Le Châble. Snowshoe routes and winter walking trails, including paths towards the high pastures, give non-skiers plenty to do, and a cross-country loop is available when snow allows.
Because the slopes face the sun, conditions are at their best in midwinter; in spring the snow softens early in the afternoon, which suits a morning on the slopes followed by an afternoon in the thermal pools.
The village and the thermal baths
Ovronnaz is best known for its thermal baths, fed by a natural hot spring, which make it a favourite with Swiss visitors looking to combine skiing with wellness. Outdoor pools with mountain views are a strong draw at the end of a day on the snow, and the spa complex is open to non-residents. The village itself is spread along the hillside, with chalets, apartment buildings, a few hotels, shops and restaurants.
Below the resort, the Rhône valley is one of Switzerland's main wine regions, and the villages around Leytron and Chamoson produce well-regarded Valais wines. Sion, the cantonal capital, with its two hilltop castles, is a short drive away for an afternoon of sightseeing. Give the precise address of your accommodation when booking, as the village is spread across several levels.
When to go and practical tips
The ski season normally runs from mid-December to the end of March. January and February offer the most reliable snow, while March brings spring conditions and sunshine. Weekends attract day visitors from the Valais and Vaud, so weekdays are calmer.
- Saturday traffic: the A9 around Lausanne and Montreux can slow down on winter weekends.
- Snow chains: the climb from Leytron may require them after snowfall.
- Packing: bring swimwear for the thermal baths alongside ski gear.
- Skis: declare them at booking so the vehicle has room.
The return to Geneva Airport
Allow about three hours between leaving Ovronnaz and your flight time, a little more on Saturday afternoons or in snowy weather. The descent to the valley is quick, and the motorway is direct from there. Booking your return together with the outward transfer fixes the pick-up time and saves arranging anything on the last day.
