Getting from Geneva Airport to Bourg-en-Bresse
The car leaves Geneva to the west, crosses into France and takes the A40, a spectacular motorway through the Jura with viaducts and tunnels near Bellegarde and Nantua, before descending to the plains of the Bresse. The road is usually quiet outside holiday weekends, though fog can form in the valleys in autumn and winter and snow may affect the higher sections.
Rail links between Geneva and Bourg-en-Bresse exist but often involve a change, and the timing may not fit a flight arrival. A private car is the most efficient way to arrive, especially for groups or travellers with luggage.
The Royal Monastery of Brou
Built in the early sixteenth century by Margaret of Austria in memory of her husband Philibert the Fair, Duke of Savoy, the Monastery of Brou is a jewel of late Gothic art. The church contains three magnificent tombs of white marble, an elaborately carved rood screen, intricate choir stalls and colourful stained-glass windows, while the glazed-tile roof shines in the sun. The cloisters house the town's museum of fine arts. It is one of the most visited monuments in the region and deserves at least a couple of hours.
The monastery has been restored over many years and remains a reference for anyone interested in the meeting of Flemish, French and Italian influences in the arts of the Renaissance. Its story is also a moving one: Margaret, who was regent of the Netherlands, never saw the completed church, yet she lies there beside her husband and his mother, carved in marble. Allow time for the cloisters and the museum collections, which include paintings and decorative arts from several centuries.
The town centre
The historic centre of Bourg-en-Bresse has half-timbered houses, a Gothic-Renaissance co-cathedral, Notre-Dame, and pleasant shopping streets. It is a lively provincial town with a university presence and a busy cultural agenda. Rugby and basketball have strong local followings. Weekly markets in the centre are among the liveliest in the region, and the town's covered market hall showcases poultry, cheese and seasonal vegetables from the surrounding farms. Evenings are calm, with a choice of traditional restaurants serving regional dishes. Accommodation includes town-centre hotels, guest houses in old buildings, and farm stays in the surrounding countryside.
Food and the Bresse countryside
The Bresse chicken, raised free-range on grassy meadows and identifiable by its blue feet, white feathers and red comb, echoing the French flag, is the region's pride. It appears on menus roasted, in cream sauce or with morels. The countryside around the town is dotted with traditional Bresse farms, timber-framed buildings with distinctive Saracen chimneys, some of which can be visited. Local markets offer poultry, cream, cheeses and the famous galette bressane, a sugar and cream tart.
The Dombes, a plateau of hundreds of ponds to the south, is a paradise for birdwatchers and fish lovers, with a large bird park near Villars-les-Dombes.
