Champex-Lac ski guide: from Geneva Airport to a frozen mountain lake

Champex-Lac is a tiny Valais resort around a mountain lake, about 155 km from Geneva Airport. How to get there, the skiing and how to plan a quiet stay.

Champex-Lac

Champex-Lac is about 155 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 1 hour 50 minutes by road via the Rhône valley to Martigny, then towards the Great St Bernard and up from Orsières. The journey stays in Switzerland and ends at a small village wrapped around a mountain lake; AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you from the arrivals hall right to your hotel or chalet.

  • Distance from GVA: about 155 km
  • Drive time: around 1 h 50 min
  • Border crossing: none
  • Best for: peace and quiet, cross-country, snowshoeing, gentle skiing and ski touring
  • Getting there: A1 and A9 to Martigny, Great St Bernard road to Orsières, then a winding climb

The journey from Geneva Airport

The car follows the A1 to Lausanne and the A9 along Lake Geneva and up the Rhône valley to Martigny, where the valley makes its great bend. From Martigny the road heads south towards the Great St Bernard pass, climbing through the gorges of the Drance to Orsières. Leaving the main road there, a smaller mountain road twists up through forest to Champex, which sits in a hollow at the top of the climb, around its lake.

The road from Orsières has many bends and is often snowy in midwinter, so a chauffeur used to Valais mountain roads, with winter tyres and chains on board, makes the arrival much easier. Public transport involves a train to Orsières and a bus up, which is manageable but slow with skis and luggage.

The ski area: small and peaceful

Champex-Lac has a small ski area served mainly by a chairlift rising towards La Breya, with a handful of runs through larch forest and open slopes. The pistes suit intermediate skiers who appreciate quiet slopes and natural scenery more than variety, and there are easy areas for beginners near the village. Views from the top extend across the Val Ferret and towards the Grand Combin massif.

The real charm of Champex in winter lies beyond downhill skiing. The village is a starting point for ski touring, notably towards the Val d'Arpette and the surrounding peaks, and its high, open terrain draws experienced tourers. Snowshoe trails wind through the forest, and cross-country skiers will find trails in the nearby Val Ferret, a well-known Nordic area. Tours and off-piste outings should always be undertaken with a qualified guide.

For bigger skiing, the large resorts of Verbier and Les 4 Vallées are reachable by road via Le Châble, and La Fouly in the Val Ferret offers another small, quiet area. Many visitors base themselves here and plan a couple of day trips.

The village and its lake

Champex-Lac is one of the smallest resorts in the Valais and looks like a postcard: wooden chalets and a few old hotels line the shore of a lake that freezes in winter and is surrounded by forest and peaks. In summer the village is a well-known stop on the Tour du Mont Blanc hiking route, and it keeps a pleasantly old-fashioned, unhurried feel. An alpine botanical garden, dormant in winter, is one of its summer attractions.

Services are limited to a few hotels, restaurants and a small shop, so the village suits visitors who want calm rather than nightlife. The town of Martigny, with its Roman remains and a well-known art foundation, is a pleasant outing for a rest day. Provide the exact address of your accommodation when booking, as some chalets are set back from the lake road.

When to go and practical tips

The season usually runs from December to March, depending on snowfall, with January and February the most reliable months. Touring conditions are often best in late winter and spring. The village is busier during the Christmas holidays and February school breaks, but it rarely feels crowded.

  • Snow chains: often needed on the road from Orsières after snowfall.
  • Saturday traffic: the A9 between Lausanne and Montreux is the main slowdown.
  • Equipment: declare alpine, touring or cross-country skis at booking.
  • Supplies: with few shops in the village, consider stopping in the valley for groceries.

Returning to Geneva Airport

Plan to leave Champex-Lac around three hours before your flight time, with extra margin in heavy snow or at the end of a busy weekend. The descent to Orsières and Martigny is steady, and the motorway after that is direct. Book your return together with your arrival to keep the last morning simple.
