Sion is 157 km from Geneva Airport, about 1 h 35 by motorway, and the journey stays in Switzerland from start to finish. Getting to Sion from Geneva Airport
The route is motorway all the way. From the airport it follows the A1 to Lausanne, then the A9 along the vineyards of Lavaux and past Montreux to the eastern end of Lake Geneva. From there it enters the Rhône valley, passes Saint-Maurice and Martigny, and turns east up the broad valley floor towards Sion. As you approach, the two hills of Valère and Tourbillon appear ahead, a memorable welcome after the flight.
On winter weekends the A9 is busy with skiers bound for the Valais resorts, so a margin of time is wise on Saturdays. The valley itself is one of the driest and sunniest places in Switzerland, and snow rarely disrupts the motorway.
Valère, Tourbillon and the old town
The hill of Valère is crowned by the Basilica of Valère, a fortified church whose interior holds one of the oldest playable organs in the world, along with medieval wall paintings and carved stalls.
