Crans-Montana
Crans-Montana is about 190 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 2 hours 15 minutes by road along Lake Geneva and up the Rhône valley to Sierre, then up the hillside to the sunny plateau. By public transport, trains run to Sierre, often directly from the airport, and a funicular climbs to Montana. A private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch takes you straight from the arrivals hall to your chalet, apartment or hotel on the plateau.
- Distance from GVA: about 190 km
- Drive time: around 2 h 15
- Border crossing: none, the route stays in Switzerland
- Public transport: train to Sierre, then funicular to Montana
- Car is better for: families, golf or ski equipment, addresses in Crans or outer hamlets
By train and funicular
Crans-Montana has one of the most convenient public transport links of any Swiss resort. Trains from Genève-Aéroport run along the lake and up the Rhône valley to Sierre, sometimes directly and sometimes with a change. In Sierre, the funicular station is a short walk from the railway station, and the funicular climbs through vineyards and forest to Montana. Local buses then serve the plateau, including Crans.
For a light traveller, this is a comfortable journey. With heavy luggage, golf bags or skis, and children, the walk between stations, the funicular and a final bus become harder work. Late evening arrivals are another limitation, as the connections thin out.
Coaches and shared transfers
Shared transfers to Crans-Montana are available in the season, but the efficient rail link means they are less widespread than for French resorts. For most visitors, the real decision is between the train-and-funicular combination and a private car.
Why choose a private transfer
Crans-Montana stretches over a broad plateau facing south across the Rhône valley, with views over the Valais Alps from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc on a clear day. The resort combines two main centres, Crans and Montana, plus surrounding villages and hamlets, and accommodation is spread widely. A car delivers you directly to the right door. The plateau is known for sunshine, a large ski area suited to a wide range of levels and a golf course that hosts an international tournament, so many guests travel with skis in winter or golf bags in summer.
Child seats are available on request. A Van (Mercedes V-Class) takes up to 7 passengers with 10 bags and skis, and a Minibus (Mercedes Sprinter) suits groups such as corporate seminars or sports teams. The price is fixed per vehicle, which makes sharing the car economical for families and groups.
Train or car: the honest verdict
The train is fine if you are one or two people, travel light, arrive in daytime and stay near the funicular station or a central bus stop. A private car is better if you carry skis or golf clubs, travel with children or older relatives, stay in Crans or a hamlet away from the main stops, arrive in the evening, or want to avoid changes. On departure day, being able to leave directly from your door is often the deciding factor.
Business travellers attending events and seminars on the plateau can also book a chauffeur by the hour (minimum 2 hours) for meetings or transfers within the Valais.
The drive is also a pleasant introduction to the Valais. After Lake Geneva and the Lavaux terraces, the motorway enters the wide Rhône valley, lined with vineyards and orchards, castles and old towns such as Saint-Maurice and Sion with its two hilltop fortresses. Sierre, at the foot of the plateau, is known for its wine. For visitors who arrive in the evening, the lights of the plateau above Sierre are a welcome sight after the climb.
Families should also consider the return trip: a car collected from the chalet door avoids carrying luggage back down to the funicular and the train on the last morning.
Practical tips
The motorway along the lake and up the Rhône valley is fast, but traffic around Lausanne and on winter Saturdays can slow things down. From Sierre, the road climbs in bends up to the plateau; there are several approaches, and the chauffeur picks the most suitable. Declare skis, snowboards or golf bags at booking. The plateau is a sunny place, but snow can fall heavily in winter, so the final climb is handled with suitable equipment.
