Crans-Montana

Crans-Montana lies about 190 km from Geneva Airport, and the drive takes around two hours and fifteen minutes, following the motorway along Lake Geneva and up the Rhône valley to Sierre before climbing through vineyards to the plateau. The whole route stays in Switzerland. AirportsTransfers.ch can take you directly from your flight to your hotel or apartment in Crans, Montana or the neighbouring villages.

  • Distance from GVA: about 190 km
  • Drive time: around 2 h 15 min
  • Border crossing: none, the route stays in Switzerland
  • Ski area: south-facing slopes up to the Plaine Morte glacier
  • Best for: sunshine, wide intermediate runs, mixed groups and a town-style resort

The road from Geneva Airport to Crans-Montana

The first section follows the familiar route of many Valais ski transfers: the A1 motorway to Lausanne, then the A9 along the lake past Vevey and Montreux and into the Rhône valley. The motorway continues past Martigny and Sion, through a broad valley lined with orchards and vineyards, towards Sierre.

From the Sierre area, the road leaves the valley floor and zigzags up the sunny slope through vineyards and small villages to reach the plateau at around 1,500 metres. Alternatively, drivers sometimes take the road from Sion via Lens. Both routes are well maintained and kept clear in winter. The climb offers wide views across the valley to the peaks on the southern side, and on clear days the scale of the Valais Alps is obvious from the car window.

A funicular also links Sierre with Montana, but with luggage and skis most visitors find it simpler to be driven straight to their accommodation, especially since the resort is spread out across the plateau.

The ski area and the Plaine Morte glacier

Crans-Montana's slopes face south across the Rhône valley, which gives the resort its reputation for sunshine. Several gondolas rise from different parts of the resort, including from Crans, Montana and the Aminona end, into a single connected ski area. Most pistes are wide and well groomed, ideal for confident beginners and intermediates who enjoy cruising with a view.

The highest point is the Plaine Morte glacier, reached by cable car, where a large, flat glacier plateau offers views stretching across the Alps. Snow is generally more reliable here than lower down, and the glacier often extends the skiing season. More experienced skiers will find steeper runs and the resort's World Cup slopes, and off-piste options exist for those with a guide.

Because the slopes are so sunny, snow can soften in the afternoon in spring. Starting early and skiing higher later in the day helps make the most of conditions.

The resort and where to stay

Crans-Montana is more of a small town than a traditional village. It grew from several communities on the plateau, and today Crans and Montana merge into one resort with shops, restaurants, hotels and apartment buildings set around small lakes and pine woods. Crans is known for its upmarket boutiques and its golf course, which is covered in snow in winter, while Montana has a more relaxed feel.

Choosing where to stay depends on which lift you prefer to use each morning. Accommodation near the Crans-Cry d'Err or Montana-Arnouva gondolas saves time, while staying near the lakes is quieter. Non-skiers will find winter walking trails, ice skating, cross-country skiing and plenty of cafés with views, making Crans-Montana a practical choice for families and groups with different interests.

When to go and practical tips

The season usually runs from early December to April. January offers cold, clear days, February brings school holidays and crowds, and March is popular for long, sunny days on the slopes.

  • Saturday traffic: the Rhône valley motorway is busier at weekends; an early arrival keeps the trip close to two hours.
  • Snow chains: the road up from Sierre can require chains after heavy snowfall; professional vehicles are equipped.
  • Luggage: declare skis and snowboards when booking, so the right vehicle is used.
  • Return trip: leaving three hours before a Geneva flight gives a comfortable margin.
