Geneva Airport to Gstaad: scenic train or private transfer?

Gstaad is 160 km and about 2 hours from Geneva Airport. The GoldenPass train from Montreux is beautiful; here is when a private car is the better choice.

Gstaad

Gstaad is about 160 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 2 hours by road via Lausanne and then up through the Pays-d'Enhaut, either from Bulle or from the Lake Geneva side. By rail, you travel along the lake to Montreux and then take the narrow-gauge GoldenPass line up to Gstaad, one of Switzerland's most scenic train rides. A private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is the direct alternative when comfort, luggage or timing come first.

  • Distance from GVA: about 160 km
  • Drive time: around 2 hours
  • Border crossing: none, the route stays in Switzerland
  • Rail: via Montreux and the GoldenPass line, sometimes with a change in Lausanne
  • Car is better for: chalets in Saanen or Schönried, families, lots of luggage, evening arrivals

The train: scenic, with changes

From Genève-Aéroport, trains run along Lake Geneva to Montreux, sometimes directly and sometimes with a change in Lausanne. In Montreux you change to the GoldenPass line, which climbs above the lake and through the hills of the Pays-d'Enhaut via Château-d'Œx and Saanen to Gstaad. The views are remarkable, and for a light traveller with time, this is a journey worth making for its own sake.

The changes are the limit. With large suitcases, skis or children, switching trains in Lausanne and Montreux takes effort, and evening connections are less frequent. Gstaad station is central, but many chalets lie outside the village in Saanen, Schönried, Saanenmöser, Lauenen or Turbach, and need a further taxi.

Coaches and shared services

Shared transfer services exist in the season, but Gstaad is less served by airport shuttles than the large French resorts. For most visitors, the comparison is between the train and a private car, and for many guests of the area the car is the norm.

Why a private car suits Gstaad

Gstaad is known for its traditional chalet village, its car-free promenade, its exclusive atmosphere and ski areas spread across several mountains of the Gstaad region rather than one large connected domain. Many visitors stay in private chalets in the surrounding villages, often arriving with significant luggage, sports equipment and sometimes pets. A private car goes from the arrivals hall to the chalet door, with no need to haul anything onto a narrow-gauge train.

Families can request child seats, and the chauffeur can plan a break. For couples, a First Class Sedan (Mercedes S-Class) makes the two-hour drive particularly comfortable. Groups and families with lots of equipment are best served by a Van (Mercedes V-Class) for up to 7 passengers and 10 bags, or a Minibus (Mercedes Sprinter) for larger parties. The price is fixed for the vehicle, with nothing added on arrival.

Train or car: how to decide

Choose the train if you travel light, enjoy the scenery, arrive during the day and stay near Gstaad station. Choose a private car if you are going to a chalet outside the village, travelling with children, carrying skis or a lot of luggage, arriving in the evening, or simply prefer not to change trains. On the return journey, a car lets you leave at the time that suits you and check in at Geneva without any connection to worry about.

The region is also lively in summer, with hiking, tennis and music events, and many visitors arrive with golf bags or bicycles; these should be declared at booking.

Many visitors to Gstaad also plan day trips during their stay, for example to the Glacier 3000 area near Les Diablerets, to Montreux and the lake, or to the cheese villages of the Gruyère region. A chauffeur by the hour (minimum 2 hours) can be booked for these outings, which saves renting a car and driving on snowy roads. Business guests and families with staff often use this service for several days.

Practical tips

The roads through the Pays-d'Enhaut are well maintained but are mountain roads, with snow in winter. Chauffeurs are used to them and equipped for winter conditions. Traffic around Lausanne at rush hour is the main variable. Gstaad's centre is partly pedestrianised, so tell the team your exact address and any access instructions for your chalet or hotel.
