Day trip to Lavaux and Vevey: vineyards, lake views and wine

A day among the Lavaux vineyard terraces and in lakeside Vevey: walking routes, wine villages, tasting the local Chasselas and how to plan the day from Geneva.

The Lavaux vineyards and the lakeside town of Vevey make one of the most beautiful day trips from Geneva: the terraces begin just east of Lausanne, itself 61 km and about 45 minutes from Geneva Airport, and Vevey lies at their eastern end, about an hour from GVA. Walk among the vines, taste the local Chasselas and finish by the lake. AirportsTransfers.ch handles the driving, so the tasting needs no restraint.

  • Where: between Lausanne and Vevey on Lake Geneva
  • Status: UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape
  • Wine: mainly Chasselas, the local white grape
  • Villages: Cully, Epesses, Rivaz, Saint-Saphorin, Chexbres
  • Vevey: lakefront, market square and the food museum

The Lavaux terraces

Lavaux is a stretch of vineyards rising steeply from the shore of Lake Geneva, built up over centuries on hundreds of stone-walled terraces. Monks began shaping them in the Middle Ages, and today they form a cultural landscape recognised by UNESCO for the way people have worked this land over generations. The views are the attraction: rows of vines tumbling towards the water, the lake stretching away and the French Alps rising on the far shore. Locals speak of three suns warming the vines: the sun in the sky, its reflection on the lake and the heat stored by the stone walls.

Walking among the vines

Footpaths and narrow lanes link the villages, so the best way to experience Lavaux is on foot. A popular walk runs between Cully, Epesses, Rivaz and Saint-Saphorin, with plenty of ups and downs and several hours of walking if you go the whole way; shorter sections are easy to choose. Chexbres, higher up, has a famous viewpoint over the terraces and the lake. Paths are well marked, but some are steep, so wear good shoes, bring water in summer and start in the morning to avoid the midday heat. A chauffeur can drop you at the start of a section and pick you up at the end, which makes a one-way walk possible.

Wine tasting

The local grape is Chasselas, a delicate white that expresses its soil and slope; wines carry the names of appellations such as Dézaley, Epesses, Saint-Saphorin and Calamin, each with its own character. Small producers open their cellars to visitors, often in old village houses, and some offer tastings by appointment while others have regular opening times in season. Village wine bars, known as caveaux, serve local wines by the glass. Many winemakers also produce reds and specialities, and tasting with the person who made the wine is part of the charm. Autumn harvest time is particularly lively.

Vevey

At the eastern end of Lavaux, Vevey is a relaxed, elegant lakeside town. Its large market square opens onto the water, and the promenade leads past a statue of Charlie Chaplin, who spent the last decades of his life nearby; his former home above the town is now a museum. The Alimentarium, a museum about food, is known for the giant fork planted in the lake in front of it. Cafés, restaurants and boutiques line the old streets, and the lakefront is pleasant for a late afternoon stroll. Montreux and the Château de Chillon are close by if you want to extend the day.

Planning the day

A good plan is to leave Geneva mid-morning, start a vineyard walk around Cully or Epesses, have lunch in a village, taste wine in the afternoon and finish in Vevey for an aperitif by the lake. Alternatively, lake steamers stop at several villages along the shore, so you can walk one way and return by boat. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons for walking; summer is hot on the terraces, and in winter the vines are bare but the views remain. Most cellars are smaller operations, so check visiting arrangements before you go. With children, the terraces are fun to explore in short sections, and Vevey's lakefront and food museum keep younger visitors busy while adults linger over a glass. If rain sets in, the cellars and Vevey's museums make a good fallback, and the view across the lake under a moody sky has its own drama. For a corporate outing, a vineyard walk followed by a private tasting and lunch is a popular half-day programme, easily reached from Geneva or Lausanne.
