Day trip from Geneva to Annecy: old town, lake and how to spend it

Annecy is the quickest escape from Geneva: canals and pastel houses in the old town, a clear Alpine lake, boat trips, lakeside villages and Savoyard food.

Annecy is the easiest day trip from Geneva: just 44 km and about 40 minutes from Geneva Airport, across the border into France. Spend the morning in the canal-lined old town, take a boat or a lakeside walk after lunch, and finish in a village on the shore or with a view from the mountains above. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you there in the morning and collect you wherever the day ends.

  • Distance: 44 km from GVA, about 40 min
  • Old town: canals, Palais de l'Isle, castle and markets
  • Lake: boat tours, swimming in summer, cycling paths
  • Villages: Talloires, Menthon-Saint-Bernard, Duingt
  • Border: the route crosses into France

The old town

Annecy's old town is a compact grid of narrow streets, arcades and pastel façades, cut through by the Thiou canal and smaller channels that give it its nickname as the Venice of the Alps. The Palais de l'Isle, a twelfth-century building shaped like a ship's prow sitting in the middle of the canal, once served as a prison and now houses a small museum on the town's history. Above the old town, the castle, the former residence of the Counts of Geneva, contains a museum and offers views across the rooftops to the lake. Morning is the best time for a walk, when the light is soft and the streets are quiet; on market days, the stalls fill the old town with cheese, charcuterie, fruit and flowers.

The lake

Lake Annecy is known for its remarkable water quality and turquoise colour, framed by steep mountains. Right by the old town, the Jardins de l'Europe and the Pâquier lawn lead to the Pont des Amours, a small bridge over the canal with views of the lake. Boat tours depart from the town and circle the lake, which is the easiest way to appreciate its scale and see the villages along the shore. In summer, the beaches fill with swimmers, pedalos and paddleboards, and a cycle path along the western shore is popular for an hour's ride. Out of season, the lake is quieter and often wrapped in mist, which has its own beauty.

Lakeside villages and viewpoints

The eastern shore has some of the prettiest spots. Talloires, on a bay facing the lake, is a peaceful village with terraces by the water and a long tradition of fine dining. Menthon-Saint-Bernard has a fairy-tale castle on a hill above the lake, associated with Saint Bernard. On the western side, Duingt has a small castle on a promontory. For a view from above, the road up the Semnoz or the Col de la Forclaz overlooks the lake, the latter famous for paragliders taking off over the water. A chauffeur can link these stops easily, which is hard to do by public transport.

Food and shopping

Annecy is in the heart of Savoie, so lunch is a chance to try local dishes: tartiflette with Reblochon from the nearby Aravis, fondue, croziflette or lake fish such as féra in season. Many restaurants in the old town have terraces along the canals, and cafés serve ice cream on warm afternoons. Shops sell local cheeses, cured sausages, honey and Savoie wines, as well as crafts. If you want to take cheese home, ask for vacuum packing. For something sweet, look for gâteau de Savoie, a light sponge cake, and for local fruit tarts in season. Annecy also has a strong café culture, and an afternoon break on a terrace by the canal, watching boats and passers-by, is part of the rhythm of the day. In the evening, restaurants around the old town and the lakeside fill up quickly, so a reservation helps if you plan to stay for dinner before heading back across the border.

A suggested itinerary

Leave Geneva at around 9 am, explore the old town and the castle in the morning, and have lunch by the canals. In the early afternoon, take a boat tour around the lake or walk to the Pont des Amours and along the shore. Late in the afternoon, drive along the eastern shore to Talloires for an aperitif with a view, then return to Geneva in about an hour. Summer weekends are busy, especially in July and August; midweek visits or the shoulder seasons are calmer. Bring identity documents, as you cross the border into France.
