Day trips from Geneva: Switzerland, France and Italy in a day

A round-up of day trips from Geneva, from Annecy and Lavaux to Chamonix, Gruyères, Zermatt and Aosta, with realistic drive times and tips for planning each one.

From Geneva you can reach three countries in a day: Annecy (44 km, about 40 min) and Chamonix (90 km, about 1 h 15) in France, Lausanne (61 km, about 45 min), Montreux (91 km, about 1 h 05), Gruyères and Bern (160 km, about 1 h 50) in Switzerland, and Courmayeur (107 km, about 1 h 30) in Italy via the Mont Blanc tunnel. Zermatt and Lyon are possible with an early start. AirportsTransfers.ch offers chauffeurs for all of them.

  • Under an hour: Annecy, Lausanne, Nyon, the Lavaux terraces
  • One to two hours: Montreux, Chamonix, Gruyères, Bern, Courmayeur
  • Longer days: Lyon, Zermatt via Täsch, the Aosta Valley
  • Borders: trips into France and Italy cross the border
  • Tip: choose one main highlight per day

Lake Geneva: Lausanne, Lavaux and Montreux

The Swiss shore of Lake Geneva is the most relaxed day out. Lausanne, about 45 minutes away, has a Gothic cathedral, a steep old town and the Olympic Museum on the lakefront at Ouchy. Further east, the Lavaux vineyard terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offer walks between wine villages and tastings with lake views. Montreux, about 1 h 05 from the airport, adds a long promenade and the Château de Chillon on its rock by the water. A lake steamer can link several stops, and a chauffeur can meet you at the next pier. Nyon, on the way, has a Roman past and a small castle overlooking the water, while Vevey, between Lavaux and Montreux, offers a lakeside market square and a relaxed café scene. In autumn, the grape harvest brings the vineyards to life, and many cellars open their doors for tastings of Chasselas, the local white grape.

France: Annecy and Chamonix

Annecy is the closest foreign day trip, with canals, a pastel old town, the Palais de l'Isle and a famously clear lake. A boat tour, a walk along the shore and lunch on a terrace fill the day nicely. Chamonix, at the foot of Mont Blanc, is spectacular: the Aiguille du Midi cable car rises to a high-altitude viewpoint, and the Montenvers rack railway climbs to the Mer de Glace glacier. Both trips cross the border into France. Clear weather makes all the difference in Chamonix, so keep the day flexible.

Switzerland inland: Gruyères and Bern

Gruyères, in the canton of Fribourg, combines a medieval hilltop town and castle with a show dairy and a chocolate factory at nearby Broc, and it pairs well with an evening in Montreux. Allow time for fondue moitié-moitié in the main street and for the meringues with double cream that the region is known for; with children, the chocolate factory is often the highlight. Bern, the Swiss capital, 160 km and about 1 h 50 away, has an old town of arcaded streets that is a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Zytglogge clock tower, the bear park by the river and the Federal Palace. In summer, locals swim in the fast-flowing Aare below the old town, and the rose garden on the hillside gives a classic view over the rooftops. Both are easy, relaxed days with plenty to see on foot, and neither involves a border crossing.

Longer days: Zermatt, Lyon and Italy

With an early start, you can see the Matterhorn in a day. Cars stop at Täsch, 231 km and about 2 h 35 away, and a shuttle train takes you into Zermatt; the Gornergrat railway then climbs to a viewpoint facing the peak. Lyon, 150 km and about 1 h 45 away, is a feast for food lovers, with bouchons, markets and the Renaissance old town. Through the Mont Blanc tunnel, Courmayeur and the Aosta Valley offer Italian lunches, castles and Roman ruins in Aosta. These are long days, and travelling by chauffeured car makes them far less tiring than driving yourself.

Planning a successful day trip

Pick one highlight and build the day around it rather than trying to tick off several towns. Check the weather for mountain trips, as cable cars and viewpoints are pointless in cloud. Leave early in summer and on winter weekends, when traffic towards ski resorts builds up. Bring identity documents for trips into France or Italy. With children, plan breaks every hour or so, and request child seats in advance. For groups, a single vehicle keeps everyone together and is often more economical per person than several train tickets.
