What Europa-Park is
Europa-Park is Germany's largest theme park and one of the best-known in Europe. It was created by a family of fairground ride makers and has grown over the decades into a large resort on the edge of the village of Rust, in the Upper Rhine plain between the Black Forest and the French border. The park is organised into themed areas, most of them inspired by European countries, so in one afternoon you may walk from a Greek village to a Scandinavian harbour or an Italian piazza, each with its own architecture, food and rides.
Rides range from gentle attractions for small children to large roller coasters that draw enthusiasts from across the continent. There are also shows, parades and seasonal decorations, and next door the resort has a separate indoor water park, Rulantica. Several themed hotels, a campsite and other accommodation belong to the resort, which is why many visitors stay two or three nights.
Planning your visit
Opening periods and hours vary through the year, with a main summer season and special winter and Halloween periods, so check the park's own calendar before fixing your travel dates. Weekends and German school holidays are the busiest times; a weekday visit outside holiday periods usually means shorter queues. Tickets and hotel nights are best booked in advance, especially in high season.
With children, a two-day visit is far less tiring than trying to do everything in one. Start with the rides your family cares most about while queues are short in the morning, take a long break at midday, and keep the shows and gentler areas for the afternoon. Height restrictions apply on many rides, so measure younger children beforehand to avoid disappointment at the entrance to a coaster.
Getting there from Geneva Airport
The usual route runs north-east across Switzerland on the motorway via Lausanne or Neuchâtel towards Bern and then Basel, where it crosses into Germany and continues north on the A5 motorway along the Rhine valley to the Rust exit. The park and its hotels are signposted from the motorway and lie only a short distance from it. In normal traffic the trip takes about 3 h 30; on summer Saturdays and around German holiday starts the motorway near Basel and Freiburg can be busy, so the chauffeur plans with a margin.
On a drive of this length a stop is part of the plan, and the chauffeur can suggest a service area at a convenient moment, for a meal, a toilet break or a change of nappies. Travelling by train is possible, with changes and a final bus or taxi from the nearest station, but with young children, pushchairs and luggage for several days, door-to-door travel is considerably easier.
Travelling as a family or group
The vehicle depends on the size of your party. A Mercedes E-Class suits a couple or a small family with three bags. The Mercedes V-Class van, with room for up to seven passengers and ten bags, is the usual choice for larger families or two families travelling together, and there is space for a pushchair. School classes, sports clubs or company outings can travel together in a Mercedes Sprinter minibus. Because the price is per vehicle rather than per person, sharing a car between several travellers often compares well with buying individual train tickets. Child seats and boosters are fitted on request, so mention the ages of the children when booking.
Practical tips
Pack comfortable shoes, a light rain jacket and sun protection, as much of the park is outdoors. If you plan to visit the water park, bring swimwear in your day bag. Keep passports or identity cards for everyone handy, since the trip crosses an international border. Ask the chauffeur to drop you at your hotel reception if you are staying on site; for the return, agree a pick-up time that leaves enough margin for your flight from Geneva, especially on a Sunday afternoon when traffic towards Switzerland can be heavy.
