Chillon Castle

Chillon Castle sits on a rock in Lake Geneva just beyond Montreux, 96 km from Geneva Airport, which is roughly a 1 h 10 drive on the motorway along the lake. A private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch takes you from the arrivals hall to the castle car park without a single change, and can wait while you visit or carry on to your hotel on the Riviera.

  • Distance from GVA: about 96 km by road
  • Drive time: around 1 h 10 in normal traffic
  • Border crossing: none, the whole route stays in Switzerland
  • Time to allow on site: two hours is comfortable for a first visit
  • Best for: history lovers, families, a half-day stop on the way to Montreux or the Alps

What Chillon Castle is

Chillon is one of the most photographed buildings in Switzerland, and it earns the attention. The castle stands on a small rocky island linked to the shore by a short bridge, so from the lakeside path it seems to float on the water, with the mountains of the Chablais rising behind. Its origins go back to the Middle Ages, and for centuries it was a stronghold of the Counts of Savoy, who used it to control the narrow strip of land between the lake and the mountains, a natural route between northern Europe and the Alpine passes. Later it passed to Bern and then to the canton of Vaud, which still owns it today.

The castle became famous far beyond Switzerland thanks to Lord Byron. His poem The Prisoner of Chillon tells the story of François Bonivard, a Genevan held in the vaults in the sixteenth century, and visitors still look for the name Byron carved into a pillar of the dungeon. Romantic-era writers and painters followed, and the castle has drawn travellers ever since.

What to see inside

A visit follows a marked route through courtyards, halls, bedrooms, a chapel and defensive towers, so you can go at your own pace. Highlights include the vaulted underground rooms cut into the rock, where the light from the lake comes through narrow openings, the great halls with their painted walls and heavy timber ceilings, and the latrines hanging over the water, which children tend to remember best. Climbing the keep gives a view across the lake towards the French shore and up to the Dents du Midi on a clear day.

Inside, many floors are uneven and staircases are narrow and steep, so comfortable shoes help and the upper levels are not easy with a pushchair. Audio guides and information panels are available in several languages; check the castle's own website for current visiting arrangements before you travel, as they can change with the season.

Combining Chillon with the Montreux Riviera

Chillon rarely takes a whole day, which makes it easy to pair with something else. The lakeside promenade from Montreux runs past the castle and is a pleasant, flat walk among flower beds and palm trees, with the statue of Freddie Mercury on the Montreux waterfront along the way. Vevey, a little further back towards Lausanne, has its own lakefront and the Alimentarium food museum, while the terraced vineyards of Lavaux, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lie between Lausanne and Vevey and are spectacular in late summer and autumn.

For a slower day, a chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) lets you build a loop: castle in the morning, lunch on the Riviera, a short drive up through the Lavaux vineyards in the afternoon, and back to Geneva or your hotel in the evening, without parking to think about.

Getting there from Geneva Airport

The route is simple. From the airport the car joins the A1 motorway towards Lausanne, then continues on the A9 along the hillside above Lavaux and Vevey before dropping towards Montreux and Villeneuve. The castle has its own exit area just off the lakeside road, so the car can stop close to the entrance. In ordinary traffic the trip takes about 1 h 10; on Friday evenings and around the Lausanne junctions it can be slower, and the chauffeur adapts the timing accordingly.

By public transport you would usually take a train from the airport towards Lausanne and Montreux, then a local bus or a walk along the lake. It works well for light travellers, but with suitcases, small children or a tight connection after a flight, a door-to-door car is less tiring. It is also handy if Chillon is a stop on a longer journey, for example on the way to Gstaad, Verbier or Zermatt: the chauffeur waits while you visit and then continues with your luggage still in the boot.

Practical tips for your visit

The castle is popular, especially in summer and during school holidays, so arriving early or later in the afternoon usually means fewer groups in the narrow rooms. Bring a light layer even in warm weather, as the underground vaults stay cool. Photographers should walk a few minutes along the shore towards Villeneuve or Montreux for the classic view of the walls reflected in the lake. If you are travelling with children, the latrines, the prison and the battlements tend to hold their attention better than the furnished rooms.
