Getting there from Geneva Airport
The drive heads along Lake Geneva to Lausanne and then north across the Swiss plateau to Basel on motorways. At Basel the route crosses the border into Germany and follows the A5 autobahn north through the Rhine plain to Freiburg. The motorway sections are straightforward, with the most congestion usually around Lausanne at peak hours and on the Basel bypass.
Freiburg's old town is largely closed to cars, so drop-offs are made at the nearest accessible point to your hotel. For university visits, conferences or medical appointments, your chauffeur can take you straight to the relevant site on the edge of town.
The Minster and the old town
The Freiburg Minster, built in red sandstone over several centuries, dominates the old town. Its openwork Gothic spire is one of the most admired in Germany, and the tower can be climbed for views over the rooftops to the Black Forest hills. Around it, the Münsterplatz hosts a busy daily market with produce from the region, and the historic merchants' hall with its red façade faces the cathedral.
Running alongside many streets are the Bächle, small open water channels that have carried water through the city since the Middle Ages. Two medieval gates, the Martinstor and the Schwabentor, survive, and the Augustinermuseum, in a former monastery, holds an important collection of medieval art. Above the old town, the Schlossberg hill can be climbed on foot or by a small funicular, with a viewing tower and beer garden.
University city and green living
The Albert-Ludwigs University, founded in the 15th century, is one of Germany's oldest, and students give the city a young, relaxed atmosphere with plenty of cafés and bars. Freiburg is also known internationally for sustainable urban planning: the Vauban district, built on a former military site, is often cited as a model of car-light, energy-efficient neighbourhood design, and cycling is the dominant way of getting around.
This mix makes Freiburg a common destination for academic conferences, research visits and environmental technology business, and a convenient base for visits to clinics and institutes in the region.
Where to stay and day trips
The old town is the obvious base for short stays, with everything within walking distance. Areas just outside the ring, such as Wiehre and Herdern, are quieter residential districts with leafy streets, while hotels near the main station are practical for business and rail connections. In the hills, spa towns and Black Forest villages offer a rural alternative.
- Schauinsland, Freiburg's own mountain, reached by cable car
- Titisee and the high Black Forest through the Höllental
- The Kaiserstuhl, a volcanic hill area known for wine
- Colmar and the Alsace Wine Route across the Rhine
- Staufen and the small towns of the Markgräflerland
Practical tips
Freiburg enjoys a relatively warm, sunny climate for Germany, and spring and early autumn are especially pleasant. Shops close on Sundays, as across Germany, though cafés and the cathedral remain open. Germany uses the euro, and some smaller places still prefer cash. Watch where you step: the Bächle are shallow but easy to stumble into, and local legend says that anyone who steps in one will marry someone from Freiburg.
If you are moving to Freiburg for studies or work with a lot of luggage, a van is the simplest way to bring everything in one trip.
