Locarno
Locarno is about 317 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 3 h 55 min by road via Valais, the Simplon Pass and a short section through northern Italy. Set at the northern end of Lake Maggiore, it is known for its arcaded Piazza Grande, its hilltop sanctuary and its film festival, and it is the gateway to some of Ticino's most beautiful valleys. AirportsTransfers.ch brings you there directly from Geneva, without changing trains in Brig, Domodossola or Bellinzona.
- Distance from GVA: about 317 km by road
- Drive time: around 3 h 55 min
- Border crossing: the route crosses into Italy at the Simplon and back into Switzerland in Ticino
- Known for: Piazza Grande, Madonna del Sasso, the film festival
- Gateway to: the Verzasca, Maggia and Centovalli valleys
Getting there from Geneva Airport
The quickest route follows Lake Geneva and the Rhône valley up through Valais to Brig, then crosses the Simplon Pass into Italy. From Domodossola, the road through the Vigezzo valley and the Centovalli leads back into Switzerland and down to Locarno; the alternative is to drop to Lake Maggiore and follow the shore north. In bad winter weather, a longer route through central Switzerland and the Gotthard road tunnel is possible.
Expect the final hour to be on winding valley or lakeside roads. A private chauffeur takes care of the route choice and border crossings, which are generally smooth but worth allowing for in your timing.
Piazza Grande and the old town
The Piazza Grande is Locarno's centre: a long, stone-paved square with arcades on one side, lined with cafés and shops. It becomes an open-air cinema each summer during the Locarno Film Festival, when a huge screen is set up and thousands of spectators watch films under the stars. The rest of the year it is a lively meeting place and hosts markets.
Behind the square, the old town climbs the hill with narrow streets, churches and palazzi. The Castello Visconteo, a medieval castle partly rebuilt over the centuries, houses a museum on local history and archaeology. The lakefront promenade, with palm trees and gardens, leads towards the boat landing stage.
Madonna del Sasso and Cardada
Above the town, the sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso sits on a rocky spur and is one of Ticino's most recognisable landmarks. Founded in the 15th century, it can be reached by funicular from the centre or on foot along a path lined with chapels. The view of the lake from its terraces is remarkable.
From Orselina, near the sanctuary, a cable car climbs to Cardada and a chairlift continues to Cimetta, where viewpoints take in the lake, the Alps and, on clear days, a wide sweep of northern Italy. In summer there are easy walking paths; in winter the area has limited skiing and snowshoeing.
The valleys, where to stay and day trips
Locarno's real wealth lies in the valleys behind it. The Verzasca valley is famous for its clear green river, stone villages and the double-arched bridge at Lavertezzo; the Maggia valley leads deeper into the mountains; and the Centovalli railway winds across viaducts towards Domodossola. For a stay, the lakefront and old town are central and lively, while Minusio, Muralto and Orselina offer quieter hillside settings with views.

Practical tips
Locarno is one of the sunniest towns in Switzerland and has a notably mild climate; camellias and mimosa bloom early in spring. The film festival and summer holidays are the busiest periods, with accommodation filling up well in advance. Ticino is Italian-speaking and uses Swiss francs. Local cooking shares much with Lombardy, with risotto, polenta, chestnuts and Merlot wines from the surrounding hills; the traditional grotti, rustic eating places in the woods and valleys, are part of the experience. River swimming in the valleys is tempting in summer, but currents can be strong and water levels can rise suddenly: follow local warnings.
If you are bringing hiking kit, bikes or climbing gear for the valleys, mention it when booking so there is room in the vehicle.
