Bellinzona
Bellinzona is about 343 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 4 h by road via the Simplon Pass or, in summer, the Nufenen Pass. The capital of Ticino guards the valleys leading to the main Alpine passes, and its three medieval castles, listed by UNESCO, make it one of the most striking fortified towns in the Alps. AirportsTransfers.ch takes you from the arrivals hall to the heart of Ticino in a single journey.
- Distance from GVA: about 343 km by road
- Drive time: around 4 h
- Border crossing: depending on the route, a short stretch through northern Italy; summer routes stay in Switzerland
- Known for: three UNESCO castles, the Saturday market, Italian-speaking Swiss culture
- Gateway to: Locarno, Lugano and the Ticino valleys
Getting there from Geneva Airport
There are several routes, and the right one depends on the season. In summer, the Nufenen Pass from upper Valais into the Bedretto valley offers a direct, high mountain crossing that stays in Switzerland. In the rest of the year, the usual route crosses the Simplon into Italy, then returns to Switzerland via the Centovalli or Lake Maggiore before reaching Bellinzona through the Magadino plain. In bad weather, the longer route through central Switzerland and the Gotthard road tunnel is the safe option.
Whichever way you go, the drive includes mountain sections, which explains the four-hour journey. Your chauffeur checks pass openings and tunnel traffic before leaving, which is especially important for the return trip to a flight.
The three castles
Bellinzona's castles, together with their connecting walls, were built and expanded mostly by the Dukes of Milan in the 15th century to control the routes over the Alps. Castelgrande, on a rocky hill in the centre of town, is the largest, with two tall towers and a long wall reaching down towards the river; a lift built into the rock brings visitors up from the old town. Montebello, higher on the slope, is surrounded by moats and drawbridges, and Sasso Corbaro, on a wooded hill above, offers the widest views.
The three castles and the walls were inscribed together on UNESCO's World Heritage list. A walk linking them takes a good half-day, with views over the town, the Ticino river and the mountains; each castle has a small museum or exhibition.
The town and its market
Below the castles, the old town has arcaded streets, squares with Lombard-style houses and churches such as the Collegiata dei Santi Pietro e Stefano, with its Renaissance façade. The Saturday market fills the centre with regional produce, cheese, sausages, bread, wine and crafts, and is one of the liveliest in Ticino.
As the cantonal capital, Bellinzona is an administrative town with government offices and the Swiss Federal Criminal Court. It is also a transport hub on the north-south Gotthard axis and has a growing biomedical research sector, which brings business visitors and conferences.
Where to stay and day trips
The old town is convenient for exploring the castles on foot. Accommodation around the station suits business travellers and those using trains for day trips. Villages on the surrounding hills and in the nearby valleys offer quieter settings with views.
- Locarno and Ascona on Lake Maggiore
- Lugano and its lake
- The Verzasca valley and its clear green river
- The Leventina valley and the old Gotthard road
- The Morobbia and Calanca valleys for walks
Practical tips
Bellinzona is Italian-speaking and uses Swiss francs. The town enjoys a mild climate compared with northern Switzerland, and spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for walking between the castles. Local specialities include risotto, polenta, cured meats and Ticino Merlot. Carnival, known here as Rabadan, is a major local event that fills the streets in the weeks before Lent.
Wear comfortable shoes: the paths up to Montebello and Sasso Corbaro are steep in places. Castelgrande is easy to reach with the lift from Piazza del Sole, so even visitors with limited mobility can enjoy the walls and views. The castles are floodlit in the evening, and the view from the old town at dusk is worth staying for.
