Ascona

Ascona is about 316 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around 3 h 55 min through Valais, over the Simplon Pass and across a corner of northern Italy into Ticino. This former fishing village on Lake Maggiore is known for its palm-lined promenade, its old lanes and a mild, almost Mediterranean climate. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you there in one go, with no changes between Swiss and Italian trains.

  • Distance from GVA: about 316 km by road
  • Drive time: around 3 h 55 min
  • Border crossing: the route crosses into Italy at the Simplon and back into Switzerland in Ticino
  • Known for: the lake promenade, Monte Verità, a mild climate
  • Good for: relaxed breaks, golf, walking, lake activities

Getting there from Geneva Airport

The fastest road route runs along Lake Geneva and up the Rhône valley through Valais to Brig, then over the Simplon Pass into Italy. From Domodossola, the road either follows the Vigezzo valley and the Centovalli into Ticino or heads down to Lake Maggiore and north along the shore through Cannobio and Brissago. Either way you re-enter Switzerland before reaching Ascona.

The alternative through central Switzerland and the Gotthard tunnel is considerably longer, so it is used mainly when the Simplon is affected by heavy snow or closures. The final kilometres of the Simplon route are on valley and lake roads, which is why the drive takes close to four hours. On the return leg, leave a sensible margin before your flight, especially on Sunday afternoons in summer.

The village and the lakefront

Ascona's heart is the Piazza Giuseppe Motta, a long waterfront promenade lined with pastel houses, cafés and restaurant terraces facing the lake and the mountains on the far shore. Behind it, narrow cobbled lanes lead to small squares, galleries and craft shops. The Collegio Papio, a Renaissance college with an arcaded courtyard, and the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul are among the historic buildings worth seeking out.

The village has a long association with artists and writers, and its small museums and galleries reflect that. Ascona is also known for its summer jazz festival, which fills the lakefront with live music for several days each year.

Monte Verità and the Brissago Islands

On the hill above the village, Monte Verità was, in the early 20th century, home to a community of artists, thinkers and reformers who experimented with vegetarianism, natural living and new forms of dance. The site, with its gardens and historic buildings, now hosts a cultural centre and a small museum that tells this unusual story, and its paths offer views over the lake.

Just offshore, the Brissago Islands form a cantonal botanical garden. Thanks to the lake's mild microclimate, plants from the Mediterranean, Asia, the Americas and South Africa grow there in the open air. Boats leave from Ascona's landing stage in the warmer months, and a visit makes a calm half-day.

Where to stay and day trips

Staying on or near the lakefront gives you the views and the evening atmosphere; hillside villas and hotels above the village are quieter, with panoramic terraces. Ascona has a well-known golf course on the flat land near the Maggia delta, and its beaches and lidos are popular in summer. Locarno, the larger neighbouring town, is a few minutes away and offers more shopping and a railway station.

  • Locarno's Piazza Grande and the Madonna del Sasso sanctuary
  • The Maggia and Verzasca valleys, with stone villages and clear rivers
  • The Centovalli railway towards Domodossola
  • Cannobio and the Italian shore of Lake Maggiore
  • Cardada and Cimetta above Locarno for walks

Practical tips

Ascona's season runs from spring to autumn, with Easter, summer and the September grape harvest especially busy. Winters are mild by Swiss standards, but some hotels and restaurants close from November to March. Ticino is Italian-speaking and uses Swiss francs, though euros are often accepted in tourist areas at a less favourable rate.

The old lanes are cobbled and the lakefront is partly closed to traffic, so your chauffeur will stop at the nearest permitted point to your accommodation. If you are bringing golf clubs, bicycles or water-sports equipment, mention them when booking.
