Titisee-Neustadt

Titisee-Neustadt is about 314 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around 3 h 50 min via Basel and then up into the southern Black Forest. The town combines the holiday resort of Titisee, on the lake of the same name, with the older market town of Neustadt a few kilometres away. AirportsTransfers.ch can take you from the arrivals hall to your hotel or holiday flat in the forest without changing trains.

  • Distance from GVA: about 314 km by road
  • Drive time: around 3 h 50 min
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into Germany near Basel
  • Known for: Lake Titisee, Black Forest scenery, cuckoo clocks, winter sports
  • Good for: walking holidays, families, cross-country skiing

Getting there from Geneva Airport

The route runs along Lake Geneva to Lausanne and then north across the Swiss plateau to Basel, mostly on motorway. Around Basel it crosses the border into Germany. From there you either follow the Rhine valley north towards Freiburg and climb east through the Höllental, or take the roads through the southern Black Forest via the Wiese or Alb valleys. Both end with a winding, wooded climb.

Those final forest roads explain why the trip takes nearly four hours. In winter they are regularly snow-covered and winter tyres are required; a chauffeur used to mountain driving is a real advantage. Summer weekends see more traffic around the lake, but the roads rarely jam the way Alpine passes do.

Lake Titisee and the town

Titisee is a glacial lake surrounded by forested hills, about two kilometres long. The lakeside promenade in Titisee village is lined with shops selling Black Forest souvenirs, especially cuckoo clocks, along with cafés serving Black Forest gâteau. In summer you can hire rowing boats or pedalos, swim, or walk the path that circles the lake through the woods. In very cold winters the lake can freeze, though whether it is safe to walk on is decided locally each year.

Neustadt, the other half of the town, is a working market town with a church, shops and the station. On the edge of town the Hochfirst ski jump is one of the large natural-hill jumps in Germany and has hosted international ski jumping competitions.

The Black Forest around you

Titisee-Neustadt sits in the high southern Black Forest, close to the Feldberg, the highest summit in the range. The Feldberg area is the main downhill ski area of the region, with lifts suited to beginners and intermediates, while the surrounding plateaux are known for cross-country ski trails in winter. In summer the same landscape is criss-crossed with marked walking and mountain-bike routes.

The Ravenna Gorge, with its railway viaduct and waterfalls, lies near the Höllental, and the scenic Höllentalbahn railway climbs from Freiburg to Titisee and beyond. Schluchsee, a larger lake, is a short drive south and good for swimming and sailing. Further north, the area around Triberg and Furtwangen is the traditional home of Black Forest clockmaking, and several museums and workshops show how the famous cuckoo clocks are made.

Where to stay and day trips

Titisee village has the largest choice of hotels, guesthouses and holiday flats, many with lake or forest views, and suits most visitors. Neustadt is more practical and often quieter. Outlying villages and farmhouses rented as holiday homes give a more rural feel, though you will want transport for shopping and excursions.

  • Freiburg im Breisgau: the cathedral and old town, under an hour away
  • The Feldberg for walks or winter skiing
  • Triberg and its waterfalls, also home to cuckoo-clock workshops
  • Schluchsee for a quieter lake day
  • Basel or Lake Constance on the way back towards Switzerland

Practical tips

The Black Forest is noticeably cooler than Geneva: evenings can be chilly even in summer, and snow is common from December to March at this altitude. Pack layers and good walking shoes. Germany uses the euro, and some smaller guesthouses and cafés still prefer cash. Many hotels issue a visitor card that gives access to local buses and regional trains, which is handy for day trips.

If you are planning a winter stay with skis or a summer trip with bikes, note the equipment when booking so the vehicle has room.
