Schaffhausen
Schaffhausen is about 324 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around 3 h 25 min on Swiss motorways via Bern, Zurich and Winterthur. The town sits on the north bank of the Rhine, almost surrounded by Germany, and combines a beautifully kept old town with the Munot fortress and, just downstream, the Rhine Falls. AirportsTransfers.ch takes you there directly, avoiding train changes in Zurich.

Getting there from Geneva Airport
The route follows the A1 motorway from Geneva through Lausanne and Bern towards Zurich, then continues past Winterthur and north on the A4 to Schaffhausen. Although the canton reaches across the Rhine and borders Germany on three sides, the usual route stays entirely in Switzerland. Traffic around Zurich is the main factor in journey time.
The Rhine Falls lie at Neuhausen, just before the town, so it is easy to stop there on the way in. Some visitors arriving on an afternoon flight do exactly that and reach their hotel in the early evening.
The Rhine Falls
The Rhine Falls are among the largest waterfalls in Europe by volume of water: the whole width of the river plunges over a rocky step about 150 metres wide, with a constant roar and clouds of spray. They are at their most powerful in early summer, when snowmelt swells the river. Paths and viewing platforms on both banks bring you close to the water, and Laufen Castle, on the southern side, overlooks the falls.
Small boats cross the basin below the falls in season, and one route lands on the central rock, which visitors can climb for a dramatic view. Allow at least a couple of hours to see the falls from both sides. A footpath runs across the railway bridge just above the falls, linking the two banks, and the walk along the river between Neuhausen and Laufen is easy and well signposted. In winter the falls are quieter but still impressive, especially after rain.
The old town and the Munot
Schaffhausen's old town is one of the finest in Switzerland. Its streets are lined with guild houses and town houses decorated with painted façades and around 170 oriel windows, many richly carved. The Haus zum Ritter, with its Renaissance frescoes, is the most famous example. The former Benedictine abbey of All Saints now houses a museum covering archaeology, history and art, with peaceful cloisters and a herb garden.
Above the old town, the circular Munot fortress, completed in the 16th century, is reached by a path through vineyards. From its walls there are views over the rooftops and the Rhine. A watchman still lives in the tower and rings a bell each evening, a long-standing local tradition.
Where to stay, business and day trips
Staying in or near the old town lets you explore on foot and enjoy the streets in the evening. Neuhausen, beside the falls, is an alternative with river views. Schaffhausen has a long industrial tradition, including precision engineering and watchmaking, and business travellers often combine visits here with meetings in Winterthur or Zurich.

Practical tips
The Rhine Falls are busiest on summer weekends; early mornings or weekdays are calmer. In summer, the Rhine between Schaffhausen and Stein am Rhein is popular for boat trips and, among locals, for swimming, though currents are strong and you should only swim where it is clearly permitted. Schaffhausen uses Swiss francs, and Swiss German is spoken.
Day trips into Germany are easy from here, so keep an ID card or passport with you. Local wine is grown on the slopes around the town, notably Pinot Noir, which is known in German-speaking Switzerland as Blauburgunder, and it is worth trying in the old town's wine bars and guild-house restaurants.
