Stresa
Stresa is about 324 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 3 h 45 min by road through Valais and over the Simplon Pass into Italy. On the western shore of Lake Maggiore, it is the classic departure point for the Borromean Islands and has welcomed travellers since the 19th century, with grand lakeside hotels and gardens. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you from Geneva arrivals directly to the lakefront.
- Distance from GVA: about 324 km by road
- Drive time: around 3 h 45 min
- Border crossing: the route crosses the border into Italy at the Simplon
- Known for: the Borromean Islands, a Belle Époque lakefront, conferences and weddings
- Good for: couples, events, garden and island visits
Getting there from Geneva Airport
The route follows Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux, then runs up the Rhône valley through Valais to Brig. From Brig the Simplon Pass road crosses into Italy and descends to Domodossola, after which a fast road follows the Ossola valley south. Near Lake Mergozzo you join the lakeshore road towards Baveno and Stresa.
Stresa also has a railway station on the Simplon line, and some travellers come by train from Switzerland. With luggage, children, or a group heading to a wedding or conference, however, a door-to-door car avoids the change of train in Brig or Domodossola and the walk with bags from the station.
The Borromean Islands
The three main Borromean Islands lie just off Stresa and are the reason most visitors come. Isola Bella is almost entirely occupied by a baroque palace and its famous terraced gardens, rising in tiers from the water, with statues and white peacocks. Isola Madre, the largest, is given over to gardens and a palace with historic collections, and is known for exotic plants and trees. Isola dei Pescatori, the fishermen's island, is a tiny village of narrow lanes, small restaurants and boats pulled up on the shore.
Public and private boats leave regularly from Stresa's landing stages in season. Visiting two islands in a day is comfortable; all three is possible but rushed if you want to enjoy the gardens.
Stresa itself
The town's lakefront promenade is lined with gardens and Belle Époque hotels that recall the era when Stresa was a fashionable stop on the grand tour of the Italian lakes. Ernest Hemingway set part of his novel A Farewell to Arms here. Behind the promenade, a small pedestrian centre has shops, cafés and squares.
Just south of the centre, the Villa Pallavicino park combines gardens with an animal park, which works well for families. Stresa also hosts conferences, congresses and many weddings, thanks to its hotel capacity and the setting; arriving guests often come through Geneva or Milan airports. Organisers like the fact that delegates can step from a meeting room straight onto the lakefront, and evening receptions on the islands are a local speciality. For an event, staggered arrivals at Geneva can be grouped into shared vans, keeping costs per person sensible.
Local cooking reflects both Piedmont and the lake: risotto, freshwater fish such as perch and lavarello, and Piedmontese wines. Margheritine di Stresa, small butter biscuits created in the town in the 19th century, are a typical souvenir.
Where to stay and day trips
Lakefront hotels give the classic Stresa experience, with island views from the room and the boat piers a few steps away. Baveno, next door, is quieter and has its own lakefront, while hillside accommodation offers space and panoramas at the cost of a short drive into town.
- Verbania and the Villa Taranto botanical gardens
- Orta San Giulio and its island, around 40 minutes away
- Arona and the giant statue of San Carlo Borromeo
- Lake Mergozzo for swimming and paddling
- Locarno and Ascona at the Swiss end of the lake
Practical tips
From spring to early autumn the islands, gardens and boats operate at full pace; winter is quiet and many island attractions close. Summer weekends are busy, so start early for the islands. Italy uses the euro, and you should carry ID or a passport as the route crosses the border. Wedding parties should allow a buffer on arrival day, both for the Simplon crossing and for checking in at the lakeside hotels.
For return flights from Geneva, leave plenty of time, especially in winter when the Simplon may be slower.
