Feldberg (Black Forest)

The Feldberg, in Germany's southern Black Forest, is about 289 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around 3 h 20 min across the Swiss Plateau and over the Rhine into Germany. At 1,493 m it is the highest summit in the Black Forest, and its slopes form the largest ski area in the region, with gentle pistes and extensive cross-country trails. AirportsTransfers.ch provides private door-to-door transfers on this cross-border route.

  • Distance from GVA: about 289 km
  • Drive time: around 3 h 20 min
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into Germany
  • Ski area: Feldberg, the largest ski area in the Black Forest
  • Suits: families, beginners, intermediates and cross-country skiers

Getting there from Geneva Airport

The journey begins on Swiss motorways, heading north-east from Geneva across the Swiss Plateau towards the Basel region and the Rhine. After crossing the border into Germany, the route leaves the motorway and climbs into the wooded hills of the southern Black Forest, passing small towns and farmsteads before reaching the Feldberg area.

Most of the drive is fast and simple, but the last part is on hilly roads through the forest that can be snowy and icy in winter, sometimes even when the Rhine plain is green. A professional vehicle on winter tyres and with chains on board copes well; the main thing is to allow a little extra time on cold mornings. There are no alpine passes or tunnels on the route.

The ski area

The Feldberg is not an alpine resort, and that is part of its appeal. Its rounded summit and broad slopes are covered by a network of drag lifts and chairlifts, with pistes that are mostly blue and red and well suited to beginners, children and relaxed intermediates. A cable car on the Seebuck side climbs towards the Feldberg tower, which offers wide views over the Black Forest and, on clear days, to the Alps on the horizon.

Snow is less reliable than in the high Alps, as the area is lower and closer to the mild air of the Rhine valley, so snowmaking supports the main runs. When conditions are good, the Feldberg offers a full day of varied skiing. It is also a major cross-country destination, with prepared trails across the plateau and through the surrounding forests, as well as snowshoe and winter hiking routes.

Where to stay

Feldberg-Ort, close to the lifts, is the most convenient base, with hotels and apartments within reach of the slopes. Nearby villages and towns in the surrounding hills offer more choice, from traditional Black Forest guesthouses with wide roofs to modern holiday flats. Titisee, with its lake, and Schluchsee are a short drive away and make good bases for a mixed holiday.

Freiburg im Breisgau, the historic university city with its red sandstone cathedral and lively old town, is about an hour's drive and works well for a day off the slopes.

When to go

The season usually runs from December to March, depending on natural snow and temperatures. January and February are generally the most reliable months. Weekends and German school holidays bring many day visitors from Freiburg, Basel and the surrounding region, so weekdays are noticeably quieter.

Because conditions vary from year to year, it is worth keeping an eye on snow reports before travelling and staying flexible with dates if you can.

Practical tips

Germany uses the euro, so bring a card or some euros; Swiss francs are of little use once you cross the border. Carry valid travel documents for all passengers. Check that your accommodation is in Feldberg itself or in a neighbouring village, as the Black Forest has many small places with similar names.

Families with skis, sledges and cross-country kit should think about space; a van is often the easiest option. For the return, allow around four hours to Geneva Airport, with extra margin on snowy mornings in the forest and for traffic around Basel and the Swiss motorway network.
