Getting there from Geneva Airport

From Geneva Airport the A1 follows Lake Geneva to Lausanne, and the A12 crosses the Fribourg countryside to Bern. From Bern the A6 runs to Thun, and the A8 continues along Lake Thun to Interlaken and then along the southern shore of Lake Brienz to the end of the lake.

Beyond Brienz the road enters the Haslital, the valley of the Aare, and reaches Meiringen at the foot of the Hasliberg. If you are staying on the terraces at Reuti, Goldern, Wasserwendi or Hohfluh, a road climbs from Meiringen or from the Brünig pass, and the final part can be snowy. It is an easy, scenic drive with no border and no pass closures on the main route.

The ski area

The skiing at Meiringen-Hasliberg rises above the terraces in several sectors: Käserstatt, Mägisalp and the high ridge at Planplatten, with a gondola from Meiringen and another from the Hasliberg villages. The slopes face largely south and west, giving long sunny days and views across the valley towards the Wetterhorn and the peaks of the Bernese Oberland.

Most runs are blue and red, wide and forgiving, with dedicated areas for beginners and children. The high ground around Planplatten offers steeper skiing and off-piste options that are popular with local freeriders; go with a qualified guide. The area also has winter walking paths, sledging runs and snowshoe trails, which helps families with mixed abilities.

Meiringen and the Hasliberg

Meiringen is a small town at the meeting point of several alpine passes. Many visitors know it for the Reichenbach Falls, the scene of Sherlock Holmes's struggle with Professor Moriarty in Conan Doyle's story, and the town has a Sherlock Holmes museum. Meiringen also likes to claim the meringue as its own invention.

Above the valley, the Hasliberg villages are quieter, scattered across sunny terraces with traditional wooden chalets and wide views. Staying up there puts you closer to the lifts; staying in Meiringen gives easier access to shops, the railway and the valley's other attractions.

When to go

The season normally runs from mid-December to late March or early April. January brings cold, clear days and quiet slopes. February is busy with Swiss school holidays, especially at weekends. In March the sunny slopes soften by the afternoon, so ski the higher sectors in the morning and enjoy the terraces later.

Because the lower slopes are at a moderate altitude, it is worth checking snow conditions before booking a late-season trip; the upper sectors usually hold snow better.

Meiringen's location also makes it easy to combine a ski week with a day trip. Lucerne lies on the far side of the Brünig pass, Interlaken and Lake Brienz are close by, and the Jungfrau region is within reach for a day on different slopes or a scenic train journey.

Practical tips

Weekday traffic on the motorway around Lausanne and Bern can slow at rush hour, but Saturdays are generally calmer than on the roads to the big French resorts. Winter tyres are needed, and chains may be required on the climb to the Hasliberg villages after snowfall.

If you are staying on the terraces, give your chauffeur the exact hamlet name, as the villages are spread out. For the return, allow around three and a half hours to Geneva Airport, including a margin for snow on the terrace roads.
