Pragelato

Pragelato is about 251 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around three hours via the Fréjus Tunnel, Oulx and the Colle del Sestriere, then down into the Val Chisone. A quiet village of stone hamlets, it hosted the ski jumping and cross-country events of the 2006 Winter Olympics and offers access to the Via Lattea via Sestriere. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you there privately at a fixed price per vehicle.

  • Distance from GVA: about 251 km
  • Drive time: around 3 h
  • Border crossing: into France, then into Italy via the Fréjus Tunnel
  • Ski area: cross-country trails, a local lift area and access towards Sestriere
  • Suits: cross-country skiers, quiet family holidays and mixed groups

Getting there from Geneva Airport

From Geneva the route goes south on the A41 to Chambéry, then east on the A43 up the Maurienne valley to the Fréjus Tunnel. In Italy you leave the motorway at Oulx and climb through Cesana Torinese to the Colle del Sestriere, the high pass at the top of the Via Lattea.

From Sestriere the road descends into the Val Chisone, and after a few kilometres of bends you reach the hamlets of Pragelato spread along the valley floor. The section over the pass is the most exposed to snow and wind, so winter tyres and chains are needed. It is a longer and more winding route than the drive to Sauze d'Oulx, which explains the extra time.

Skiing in and around Pragelato

Pragelato is first and foremost a cross-country destination. The trails laid out along the Val Chisone were used for the Olympic cross-country races in 2006, and the valley floor offers a network of prepared tracks for both classic and skating styles, suitable for beginners and seasoned Nordic skiers alike. The Olympic ski jumps stand on the slope above the village.

For downhill skiing, Pragelato has a small local lift area with a connection up towards Sestriere, opening onto the slopes of the Via Lattea. Check which lifts are running during your stay, as the link depends on the season and snow. Many visitors use Pragelato as a quiet base and drive or take the bus up to Sestriere for a full day on the bigger network.

The village and the Val Chisone

Pragelato is made up of a series of hamlets, known locally as borgate, with stone houses, wooden balconies and small chapels, strung along the valley. The atmosphere is rural and calm, and many residents still keep links to the old Occitan culture of these valleys. The Val Troncea Natural Park, just above the village, protects a wild side valley that is popular for snowshoeing and winter walking.

Accommodation ranges from apartments and small hotels to holiday residences built around the Olympic period. Give your chauffeur the hamlet name as well as the street address.

When to go

The cross-country season generally runs from December to March, depending on snow on the valley floor. January is often cold and reliable for Nordic skiing. February brings Italian school holidays and weekend visitors from Turin. In March, the valley trails can thin out while the higher slopes around Sestriere still offer good alpine skiing.

Pragelato also suits groups where some members ski downhill and others prefer cross-country, snowshoeing or simply quiet walks.

The valley floor lies lower than Sestriere, so in a mild winter the cross-country tracks may depend on snowmaking or close earlier than the alpine slopes above. If Nordic skiing is the main purpose of your trip, keep an eye on conditions as your dates approach and stay flexible where possible.

Practical tips

Saturday mornings are busy on the A43 and at the Fréjus Tunnel, so if possible travel early or on a weekday. Bring valid travel documents for everyone, as the route crosses into Italy, and euros for small purchases in the village.

Cross-country equipment is light but long, so declare it along with any alpine skis. For the return, allow about four hours to Geneva Airport, including the climb back over the Sestriere pass, which can be slow after snowfall.
