Altdorf
Altdorf, the small capital of the canton of Uri, is about 305 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 3 h 10 min by road via Bern and Lucerne and then along Lake Lucerne. It is the town of the William Tell legend and a gateway to the Gotthard, the Klausen Pass and some of central Switzerland's most dramatic lake scenery. AirportsTransfers.ch brings you there directly from arrivals, without train changes.

- Known for: the William Tell monument and legend, Lake Uri
- Gateway to: the Gotthard, Klausen Pass and Andermatt
Getting there from Geneva Airport
The route follows the motorway from Geneva to Lausanne and Bern, then heads east towards Lucerne. Beyond Lucerne the A2 runs along the shore of Lake Lucerne and through a series of tunnels, including the long Seelisberg tunnel, before emerging at the southern end of the lake near Flüelen. Altdorf sits just a couple of kilometres inland.
This is the main north-south route through Switzerland towards the Gotthard, so traffic can be heavy at the start and end of holiday periods, particularly on Saturdays and before long weekends. Your chauffeur keeps an eye on traffic reports and adjusts timings, which matters most on the return leg to catch a flight.
William Tell and the town
Altdorf is where, according to legend, William Tell shot the apple from his son's head on the orders of the Habsburg bailiff Gessler. The bronze Tell monument on the main square, created by Richard Kissling and unveiled in 1895, shows Tell and his son and has become one of the best-known images of Switzerland. The square around it is the heart of a small, calm town with arcaded houses, churches and the cantonal government buildings.
The neighbouring village of Bürglen, said to be Tell's birthplace, has a museum dedicated to the legend. Altdorf also has a long theatre tradition linked to Schiller's play Wilhelm Tell, which has been staged here by local performers for generations.
Lake Uri and the founding of Switzerland
The southern arm of Lake Lucerne, known as Lake Uri or Urnersee, is a fjord-like stretch of water hemmed in by steep cliffs. Across the lake lies the Rütli meadow, traditionally seen as the place where representatives of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden swore the oath that led to the Swiss Confederation. It can be reached by boat from Flüelen and other lake ports, and many visitors combine it with a lake cruise.
Along the eastern shore, the Tellsplatte chapel marks the spot where Tell is said to have leapt from Gessler's boat. The lakeside path known as the Swiss Path, built for the country's 700th anniversary, runs around the lake and makes for a fine day's walking in sections.
Where to stay and day trips
Accommodation in Altdorf is modest and practical, suited to travellers who want a quiet base near the lake and mountains. Some visitors prefer lakeside villages such as Flüelen, or stay in Lucerne and visit Uri for a day. Andermatt, up the valley beyond the Schöllenen gorge, offers a more resort-style stay.
- Andermatt and the Schöllenen gorge with the Devil's Bridge
- The Klausen Pass road towards Glarus, open in summer only
- A lake steamer from Flüelen to Lucerne
- The Gotthard Pass and its historic road, in season
Practical tips
Uri is a mountain canton, and the weather can change fast; the warm föhn wind is a feature of the valley and can bring sudden clear, mild days followed by rain. Pass roads such as the Klausen and the Gotthard are closed in winter, so check before planning a scenic loop. In summer, by contrast, the passes are at their finest, and a chauffeur by the hour can turn a transfer day into a scenic drive over the Klausen or up to Andermatt. In winter, the valley floor is usually clear, but snow tyres are standard on any car heading higher.
Shops close early on Saturdays and most are shut on Sundays in this rural area, so plan any shopping on arrival day accordingly.
Booking a private transfer to Altdorf
A booking with AirportsTransfers.ch shows a fixed price per vehicle before payment, and you pay securely online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign and tracks your flight in case of delays, so a late landing does not mean a missed pick-up. Groups can choose a Mercedes V-Class or a Sprinter minibus, child seats come on request and a return trip can be added in the same booking.
Hikers and cyclists heading for the Uri mountains often travel with bulky kit; declare bikes, skis or large bags when you book so that the vehicle has room for everything. Call or WhatsApp +41 78 346 56 77 with any questions.
