Stoos

Stoos is about 307 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around 3 h 20 min via Bern and Lucerne to the Schlattli valley station near Schwyz. From there the Stoosbahn, billed as the steepest funicular in the world, climbs to the car-free village with views over Lake Lucerne. AirportsTransfers.ch takes you from arrivals to the funicular at a fixed price per vehicle.

  • Distance from GVA: about 307 km to Schlattli
  • Drive time: around 3 h 20 min
  • Border crossing: none, the route stays in Switzerland
  • Getting up: Stoosbahn funicular from Schlattli, or cable car from Morschach
  • Suits: families, intermediates and skiers who enjoy views

Getting there from Geneva Airport

From Geneva the A1 runs along Lake Geneva to Lausanne and the A12 across to Bern, before the route continues east towards Lucerne. Beyond Lucerne you follow the A4 towards Schwyz, along the Lake Lucerne region, and leave the motorway to reach the Schlattli valley station on the edge of Schwyz.

The road section is straightforward, mostly on motorways, with only a short final approach. At Schlattli, cars stay behind: the funicular climbs the mountain in a few minutes, its cabins tilting to keep passengers level on the steep slope. An alternative is the cable car from Morschach, above Brunnen, which also reaches Stoos. Your chauffeur drops you at whichever station suits you.

The ski area

Stoos has two main sectors: the Fronalpstock and the Klingenstock. Lifts climb to both summits, offering wide views across Lake Lucerne and towards the central Swiss Alps. The pistes are mostly blue and red, with a few more demanding runs and off-piste options on the Klingenstock side for experienced skiers with a guide.

The area is compact rather than vast, which suits families and intermediates who prefer quiet slopes and short distances. Beginners have gentle zones close to the village, and there are sledging runs and winter walking paths. On a clear day, the panorama from the Fronalpstock alone justifies the trip, with the lakes far below and peaks on every horizon.

The car-free village

Stoos is a small, car-free village on a sunny plateau, with chalets, a few hotels and holiday apartments within walking distance of the lifts. Without traffic, it feels calm and safe for children, and the evenings are quiet. The village is popular with Swiss families and day visitors from the surrounding cantons.

Down in the valley, Schwyz is the historic heart of the canton that gave Switzerland its name. Its museum dedicated to the Federal Charter of 1291 is worth a visit on a day off, and Brunnen and Lake Lucerne are close by.

When to go

The season usually runs from December to late March or early April, depending on snow. January and February are generally the most reliable months, with February busy during Swiss school holidays and weekends attracting day visitors from Zurich and Lucerne. Weekdays are noticeably calmer, and a midweek stay often means short lift queues even in high season.

Because Stoos is at a moderate altitude compared with the high Valais resorts, it is wise to check snow conditions before travelling late in the season.

The funicular itself is part of the experience. Opened in 2017 to replace an older line, it climbs a gradient that exceeds the angle of many ski slopes, and its barrel-shaped cabins rotate as the track steepens so that passengers stay level. Children usually remember the ride as much as the skiing, so try to travel up in daylight on your arrival day if your flight allows it.

Practical tips

Pack with the funicular in mind: soft bags and ski bags are easier to carry than large hard cases. Ask your accommodation whether they collect luggage from the top station. If you arrive late, check the last funicular time and let your chauffeur know so the timing can be planned.

Traffic around Lausanne, Bern and Lucerne can slow at rush hour and on Friday evenings. For the return, allow around four hours to Geneva Airport, including the funicular descent and a margin for traffic.

How to book your transfer

AirportsTransfers.ch shows the fixed price for the whole vehicle before payment, and you can pay online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Your chauffeur meets you in arrivals with a name sign, tracks your flight and waits if you land late, with waiting included. Choose an E-Class for three passengers and three bags, a V-Class for up to seven passengers with skis, or a Sprinter for groups.

Declare skis at booking, request child seats if needed and add the return pick-up at Schlattli or Morschach. Phone or WhatsApp +41 78 346 56 77, 24/7.
