Engelberg
Engelberg is about 298 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of roughly 3 h 15 min via Lausanne, Bern and Lucerne into the valley of the Engelberger Aa. Overlooked by the glaciated Titlis, it combines high glacier skiing, renowned freeride terrain and a family sector across the valley. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you there door to door at a fixed price per vehicle.

Getting there from Geneva Airport
From the airport the A1 runs along Lake Geneva to Lausanne, then the A12 crosses the countryside to Bern. From Bern you continue east towards Lucerne, then take the A2 along the shore of Lake Lucerne to Stans. There the road leaves the motorway and climbs the Engelberg valley, through Grafenort to Engelberg itself.
The climb is relatively short, well maintained and open all year, but after heavy snowfall the final stretch can be slow. Because the drive passes close to Lucerne, many visitors combine their arrival or departure with a stop in the city to see the Chapel Bridge and the old town. There is no border on this route, and the Swiss motorway vignette is already on every professional vehicle.
The ski area
The main ski area climbs from the village via Trübsee and Stand towards the Titlis, a peak of more than 3,000 m. The final stage is the Rotair, the first revolving cable car, which turns as it rises over the glacier. At the top, the Titlis Cliff Walk suspension bridge and the glacier cave are popular with sightseers. The glacier runs give reliable snow and a long season.
Engelberg is known among freeriders for its long off-piste descents, above all the Laub, a vast open slope that drops steeply towards the valley. These routes are serious and avalanche-prone, so take a qualified guide. Intermediates will find plenty of pistes around Trübsee and the Jochpass sector, while the Brunni area, on the sunny side of the valley, offers gentle slopes, children's areas and sledging.
The village and the abbey
Engelberg grew around its Benedictine monastery, founded in the 12th century and still home to a community of monks. The abbey church and its white buildings dominate the village centre. Around it, Engelberg is a lively resort with hotels, shops and restaurants, popular with international visitors from Europe, Asia and beyond.
Despite its fame, the village remains compact and walkable, with ski buses linking the centre to the Titlis and Brunni lifts. Many guests stay near the station for easy access to both.
When to go
The season generally runs from late autumn or December to spring, with the glacier sometimes opening earlier and closing later than the lower slopes. January brings cold, dry snow and quieter weekdays. February is busy with holidays and weekend visitors from Lucerne and Zurich. In March and April, the high Titlis slopes often have excellent spring snow while the lower runs soften.
Freeriders usually watch for settled periods after storms, when guides can take groups onto the big slopes safely.
Non-skiers have plenty to do as well: winter walking paths along the valley floor, sledging on the Brunni side, the excursion to the Titlis summit for its glacier views, and an easy train or car connection to Lucerne for a day of museums, lake views and the covered wooden bridges.
Practical tips
The route via Bern and Lucerne can be slow at rush hour, especially around Lausanne and Bern, so time your departure carefully. Weekends bring day traffic up the Engelberg valley. Pack sun protection and warm layers for the glacier, where it can be much colder and windier than in the village.
If you are bringing freeride gear, avalanche equipment and skis for several people, choose a vehicle with enough space. For the return, allow around four hours to Geneva Airport, with extra margin on snowy days.
