Risoul

Risoul is about 302 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around four hours (roughly 4 h 05 min) via the Fréjus Tunnel, Montgenèvre and Briançon, then down the Durance valley to Guillestre and up a winding road to the resort. Built for skiing from the 1970s onwards, Risoul 1850 is a compact, largely ski-in ski-out village linked with Vars in the Forêt Blanche. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you there privately at a fixed price per vehicle.

  • Distance from GVA: about 302 km
  • Drive time: around 4 h
  • Border crossing: into France, through Italy via the Fréjus Tunnel, back into France at Montgenèvre
  • Ski area: Forêt Blanche, shared with Vars
  • Suits: families, beginners and intermediates who like doorstep skiing

Getting there from Geneva Airport

The route from Geneva follows the A41 and A43 through Savoie and up the Maurienne to the Fréjus Tunnel, then descends into Italy before climbing to Montgenèvre and crossing back into France. From Briançon you follow the Durance valley south to Guillestre, a small town at the entrance to the Queyras.

From Guillestre a mountain road climbs through larch forest and hairpins past the old village of Risoul to the resort, Risoul 1850. This last climb takes time and needs winter equipment after snowfall. An alternative route via Grenoble and the Col du Lautaret is used when the Fréjus is congested. Either way, this is a longer transfer than most alpine resorts near Geneva, so plan your arrival day accordingly.

The ski area

Risoul shares the Forêt Blanche with Vars, a large linked domain spread over a ridge with slopes on both sides. Risoul's own slopes face mainly north, which helps preserve the snow, and the lower runs wind through larch forest, giving good visibility on stormy days. Higher up, the terrain opens into broad, sunny slopes with views across the Écrins and the Queyras.

The skiing suits beginners and intermediates particularly well, with long, wide blues and reds and gentle zones right at the foot of the village. Stronger skiers can explore the full Forêt Blanche, including steeper runs towards Vars, and find off-piste between the trees after snowfall, ideally with a guide. Snow parks attract younger skiers and snowboarders.

A purpose-built village

Risoul 1850 was designed with the aim of putting accommodation directly on the slopes, and much of the village is built in wood and stone in a style that blends with the forest. Most residences and chalets allow you to ski to the door, which is a real advantage for families with young children and heavy equipment.

The village is small and car-light, with shops, restaurants and ski schools grouped around a central area. The old village of Risoul, lower down, keeps a traditional character, and Guillestre and the Vauban fortress of Mont-Dauphin are worth a visit on a day off.

When to go

The season generally runs from mid-December to April. The southern Alps enjoy many sunny days, and Risoul often receives snow from storms arriving from Italy. January is the quietest month, while February sees French and British school holidays, when the resort is at its busiest. March offers long days and pleasant temperatures, with good snow on the north-facing slopes.

Book early for school holidays, as ski-in ski-out accommodation is in demand among families.

Outside the skiing, the resort offers sledging, snowshoe walks in the larch forest and winter walking paths with views over the Durance valley. The lake of Serre-Ponçon, further south, is a pleasant drive on a day when the upper lifts are closed by wind.

Practical tips

As this is one of the longer transfers from Geneva, a comfortable vehicle and a reasonable arrival time make a difference, especially with children. Plan a break on the way if needed, and carry valid travel documents for everyone, as the route passes through Italy.

Saturday is the classic changeover day and roads in the Durance valley can be busy. For the return, allow at least four and a half hours to Geneva Airport, more after snowfall on the climb down to Guillestre.
