Gruyères and Montreux fit neatly into one day from Geneva: drive into the Fribourg pre-Alps for the medieval town, cheese and chocolate, then descend to Lake Geneva for the Montreux promenade and the Château de Chillon. Montreux is 91 km and about 1 h 05 from Geneva Airport, and Gruyères is a short drive further inland. With AirportsTransfers.ch the loop runs smoothly, without parking or timetables.
- Morning: Gruyères town and castle, then the show dairy
- Lunch: fondue moitié-moitié in Gruyères
- Early afternoon: chocolate factory visit at Broc
- Late afternoon: Montreux promenade and Chillon
- Return: along the motorway by Lake Geneva
Why this loop works
The appeal of this day is variety. In the morning you are in the green hills of the Gruyère region, a landscape of farms and pastures with the pre-Alps behind; by late afternoon you are by the water in Montreux, with palm trees on the promenade and views of the Dents du Midi. The distances between the stops are short, so you spend more time visiting than travelling. The route makes a natural circle: out via Lausanne and the motorway towards Bulle, back via Montreux, Vevey and the lake. Doing it in this direction ends the day by the water, when the light over the lake is softest.
Gruyères in the morning
Arrive early, before the coaches, and walk up the cobbled main street of this small medieval town to the castle at the top, with its rooms, gardens and views over the valley. The museum dedicated to H. R. Giger adds an offbeat stop. Afterwards, the show dairy at the foot of the hill demonstrates how Gruyère is made, with visible vats and a maturing cellar. Lunch in the town is the moment for fondue moitié-moitié, half Gruyère and half Vacherin Fribourgeois, followed by meringues with the region's thick double cream. Keep the pace relaxed; the town is small but best enjoyed slowly.
Chocolate at Broc
A few minutes from Gruyères, the village of Broc is home to a historic Swiss chocolate maker whose visitor experience covers the history of chocolate, the ingredients and the process, and ends with a generous tasting. Families enjoy it in particular, and workshops can be booked in advance. Early afternoon is a good time to visit, after the morning rush. Buy gifts at the end, and ask for packaging that will survive a warm car if it is summer. The village sits by the river at the mouth of a gorge, and a short walk nearby is a pleasant way to digest the tasting before moving on.
Montreux and Chillon
From Broc, the road crosses the hills and descends towards Lake Geneva. Stop first at the Château de Chillon, a medieval castle on a rock at the water's edge, just beyond Montreux; its halls, towers and dungeon, which inspired Lord Byron's poem, take about an hour or so to visit. Then walk the Montreux promenade, lined with flowers and sculptures, including the statue of Freddie Mercury, who recorded music in the town. If time allows, an aperitif on a lakeside terrace rounds off the day as the sun sets over the water.
Practical tips
This is a full but comfortable day, and its stops are mostly indoors or in town, which makes it a reliable choice when the mountains are in cloud and a high-altitude excursion would be wasted; a departure from Geneva at around 8.30 am works well. Booking the chocolate visit and, in high season, the castle in advance saves time. Gruyères is on a hill with cobbles, so wear comfortable shoes. In winter, the region is quieter and the castle and dairy remain open, though days are shorter, so you may want to reverse the order or skip one stop. With children, plan breaks between stops and bring snacks; the chocolate factory and the castle usually hold their attention well. In summer, a themed train runs from Montreux towards the Gruyère region, an option if you want to do part of the route by rail. For a longer version of the day, add Vevey on the way home: its lakefront, market square and the statue of Charlie Chaplin are just a few minutes from Montreux, and a final stop among the Lavaux vineyards gives a view over the lake at sunset before the motorway back to Geneva.
