The Swiss motorway vignette is an annual permit that every car, van and motorcycle up to 3.5 tonnes needs to use Switzerland's motorways and expressways, available as a windscreen sticker or as an e-vignette linked to the number plate. Anyone driving from Geneva Airport to Lausanne, about 61 km and 45 minutes away, or on to the Valais resorts, must have one. If you travel with AirportsTransfers.ch, the vehicle is already covered and the question never arises.
- What it is: a single annual charge for using Swiss national motorways
- Formats: the traditional sticker or the electronic e-vignette
- Validity: one calendar year, with a short overlap either side
- Who needs it: drivers of light vehicles on motorways and expressways
- Transfer passengers: nothing to buy or check
How the Swiss system differs
Unlike France and Italy, where motorway users pay at toll booths according to distance, Switzerland uses a flat annual charge. There are no barriers or booths on the motorways; instead, every light vehicle using them must have a valid vignette. It does not matter whether you drive a few kilometres or cross the whole country: the same vignette covers all national motorways and expressways for the year. Some tunnels and car trains are charged separately, such as the Great St Bernard Tunnel and the car-carrying shuttles through the Lötschberg, Furka and Vereina, but the main road tunnels on the motorway network, including the Gotthard, are covered.
Sticker or e-vignette
For decades the vignette was a coloured sticker that changed design every year and had to be stuck to the inside of the windscreen. Since 2023, drivers can also buy an e-vignette online, registered to the vehicle's number plate rather than displayed on the glass. The e-vignette is convenient for visitors because it can be bought before the trip, but it is tied to one plate, so it cannot be moved to another car. The sticker is still sold at border crossings, petrol stations, post offices and similar outlets. Either format gives the same rights, and checks are carried out by police and customs, who can verify e-vignettes electronically.
Validity and who needs one
A vignette is valid for the calendar year printed on it, and in practice it can be used from the beginning of December of the previous year until the end of January of the following year. There is no short-term version for a weekend or a week. It is required for cars, motorcycles, vans and small motorhomes using the motorways; trailers and caravans need their own. Heavier vehicles pay a different, distance-related charge. Driving on a motorway without a valid vignette leads to a fine and the obligation to buy one on the spot.
The Geneva Airport twist
Geneva Airport sits right on the French border and has a French sector, so travellers who rent a car on the French side and head straight into France for Chamonix or Annecy may never touch a Swiss motorway. Cars rented on the Swiss side normally already carry a vignette. Problems arise when a French-registered car without one joins the Swiss motorway, for instance to reach Lausanne or Verbier; a few kilometres on the motorway are enough to require it. For visitors, the safest approach is to check before setting off, or to avoid the issue entirely.
Why transfer passengers can forget about it
On a private transfer, motorway charges are simply part of the service. Swiss-registered transfer vehicles carry valid vignettes as a matter of course, and on routes into France or Italy the tolls there are included in the fare as well. You do not need to know whether your route uses the motorway, how many kilometres it covers or which border crossing applies. That is one reason many travellers who might otherwise hire a car for a short stay choose a chauffeured transfer instead: the price is clear at the moment of booking, and there are no extras to deal with on the road.
