Col de la Forclaz: the mountain road between Martigny and Chamonix

The Col de la Forclaz climbs from Martigny over to Trient and on to Chamonix, linking Valais with the Mont Blanc valley. What to expect on the road.

The Col de la Forclaz is the mountain pass that carries the main road from Martigny, in Valais, over to the Trient valley and on to the French border, Vallorcine and Chamonix. It is normally kept open all year and offers a direct link between the Swiss Rhône valley and the Mont Blanc valley, with fine views on the way. From Geneva Airport, Chamonix is reached more quickly via the French motorway (about 90 km, 1 h 15), so the Forclaz matters mainly for journeys starting in Valais, and AirportsTransfers.ch chauffeurs use it for exactly those trips.

  • Connects: Martigny (Valais) and Trient, then Chamonix via Vallorcine
  • Season: generally open year-round, with occasional winter closures
  • Views: the Rhône valley bend and the vineyards above Martigny
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France at Le Châtelard
  • Best for: linking Verbier or other Valais resorts with Chamonix

Climbing out of Martigny

From the town of Martigny, the road rises in a series of wide hairpins through the vineyards of Martigny-Combe, where terraces of vines cling to the sunny slope. Within minutes, the whole Rhône valley opens out below, including the distinctive right-angled bend where the river turns from flowing west to flowing north towards Lake Geneva. Higher up, the vines give way to forest, and the road continues to climb steadily to the pass, which lies at a little over 1,500 m. Several lay-bys along the ascent make natural viewpoints, and on clear days the panorama reaches far up the valley towards Sion.

The pass and the Trient valley

At the top of the Forclaz stands a small cluster of buildings, and from here popular walking paths lead along an old irrigation channel towards the Trient Glacier, a classic summer excursion. The Tour du Mont Blanc long-distance trail also passes nearby, so in summer you will see hikers with large packs. The road then drops into the quiet Trient valley, passing the village of Trient with its pink church, and continues down to Le Châtelard, where it crosses into France. From there it is a short drive to Vallorcine and over the Col des Montets to Argentière and Chamonix.

Winter conditions

The Forclaz is a busy through-route and is cleared as a priority, so it is generally open throughout winter. Even so, it is a genuine mountain road: snowfall can make it slow, chains may be required when signs indicate, and on rare occasions it may close briefly. On the French side, the stretch over the Col des Montets is more exposed to avalanche risk and is closed from time to time after heavy snow, which cuts the direct link to Chamonix until it reopens. In those cases, the alternative from Martigny is a long detour around by Lake Geneva and the French motorway. Checking conditions before setting out is therefore essential in winter.

Its role linking Valais and Chamonix

For visitors staying in Valais, the Forclaz is the gateway to Chamonix: a day trip from Verbier to the Aiguille du Midi or a transfer between a Swiss and a French resort is easiest this way. Verbier is about 160 km and 2 h from Geneva Airport, but from Verbier to Chamonix over the Forclaz is a short mountain drive by comparison. It also forms part of popular circular itineraries, combining Lake Geneva, Valais and Chamonix in a single tour. A chauffeur with an hourly booking can turn this loop into a relaxed day of sightseeing, with stops at the viewpoints and in Trient.

What to keep in mind

The road is well maintained but steep and winding, so passengers prone to car sickness should sit in front or ask for a gentle pace. The border crossing at Le Châtelard is a small one, and identity documents should be carried. Mobile reception can vary in the Trient valley. In summer, cyclists use the climb, and there may be more traffic around the pass on fine weekends. In any season, building in a little extra time is wiser than assuming the fastest journey.
