France's mountain law: winter tyre and chain requirements in the Alps

Under France's Loi Montagne, drivers in Alpine areas must carry chains or use winter tyres in winter. What it requires, where it applies and how it affects ski transfers.

France's Loi Montagne requires vehicles in designated mountain areas, including most of Haute-Savoie and Savoie, to be fitted with winter tyres or to carry snow chains or snow socks from 1 November to 31 March. It applies to the roads leading to resorts such as Chamonix, about 90 km and 1 h 15 from Geneva Airport, and Megève, about 75 km and 1 h 10. AirportsTransfers.ch vehicles running to the French Alps are equipped to comply throughout the season.

  • Period: 1 November to 31 March each winter
  • Where: communes listed by each prefecture in mountain massifs, including the Alps
  • Requirement: winter tyres, or chains or snow socks carried in the vehicle
  • Signs: entry and exit signs mark the zone; a separate sign makes chains mandatory
  • For passengers: handled entirely by the transfer company

What the law says

The mountain law dates back to the 1980s, but its winter-equipment rules were introduced more recently, coming into force in November 2021. In the communes concerned, every light vehicle must, during the winter period, either be fitted with winter tyres or carry a set of removable devices, chains or textile snow socks, able to equip at least two driving wheels. The rules exist so that cars do not become stranded and block roads when snow arrives. Since November 2024, only tyres bearing the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol count as winter tyres; the older M+S marking on its own is no longer accepted. Fines can be issued for non-compliance.

Where it applies in the Alps

The law covers communes in France's mountain massifs, and each département's prefect publishes the list for that area. In practice, for travellers from Geneva, that means most of the routes into the Haute-Savoie and Savoie resorts: the Chablais and Portes du Soleil, the Aravis, the Grand Massif, the Chamonix and Megève areas, the Tarentaise and the Maurienne. The motorways near Geneva itself may not be included, but as soon as the road climbs towards the ski areas, you should assume the rule is in force. The precise boundaries matter less to visitors than the simple conclusion: in winter, be equipped.

Reading the signs

Zones covered by the law are marked by signs at their entry and exit points, showing a snow-covered mountain and stating the equipment obligation for the period. These signs indicate the general rule. Separately, when snow is actually on the road, a round blue sign with a tyre and chain makes chains compulsory on that stretch; at that point, winter tyres alone are no longer enough and chains must actually be fitted. Electronic information panels on major roads also show conditions and any requirement for equipment. Signs can change at short notice in a snowstorm.

What it means for ski transfers

For a skier flying into Geneva and heading for a French resort, the main point is that the vehicle must be properly equipped from November to March, whatever the weather on the day of travel. Rental cars collected in Switzerland may have winter tyres that meet the rule, but it is worth checking that chains are included. With a chauffeured transfer, compliance is the operator's job. The vehicles carry the right tyres and devices, and drivers know how to fit chains quickly in a safe place when the blue sign appears. For destinations such as Courchevel, about 150 km and 2 h 15 from the airport, or Val d'Isère, about 180 km and 2 h 45, where the final climbs are long, that experience counts.

Other winter habits in France

Beyond equipment, French mountain roads reward patience: Saturday changeover traffic, gritting lorries and buses on narrow bends are all part of winter. Chain bays, wide lay-bys marked for fitting chains, are provided on the main climbs. Speed is restricted when chains are fitted. It is also wise to keep fuel topped up and to carry water and warm clothes on longer trips, in case of delays. Finally, remember that the mountain-law period is fixed, while the weather is not: a dry week in January still falls under the rule, and an early snowfall in late October can catch out drivers who assume the season has not yet begun. Equipping the car for the whole winter avoids both problems.
