A ski and spa week in Valais pairs the big slopes of Verbier with recovery days in the thermal baths of Leukerbad, linked by a drive of roughly an hour and a half along the Rhône valley. Verbier is about 160 km and 2 h from Geneva Airport, and Leukerbad lies further east, high in a side valley above Leuk. AirportsTransfers.ch can take you from GVA to Verbier, on to Leukerbad mid-week and back to the airport.
- Ski base: Verbier, about 160 km / 2 h from GVA
- Spa base: Leukerbad, roughly 1 h 30 from Verbier by road
- Rhythm: four active days, then three gentler days with thermal baths and light skiing
- Border crossing: none, everything is in Switzerland
- Best for: couples, mixed-ability groups and anyone with tired legs by Wednesday
Why combine Verbier and Leukerbad
Verbier is a place for big days: a large linked area, the 4 Vallées, with steep runs around Mont Fort, wide pistes towards Savoleyres and Bruson, and an energetic village life. By the middle of the week, many skiers feel it in their legs. Leukerbad offers the opposite: a village at the foot of the towering Gemmi cliffs, built around naturally hot mineral springs, with large public thermal pools, indoor and outdoor, where you can soak with mountain views even in snowfall. It is one of the best-known thermal resorts in the Alps.
Leukerbad also has its own small ski area, Torrent, across the valley, with sunny, quiet slopes suitable for relaxed skiing. That means the second half of the week need not be ski-free: a few morning runs followed by afternoons in warm water is a pleasant way to wind down.
Getting to Verbier from Geneva Airport
From GVA the motorway follows Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux, enters the Rhône valley and reaches Martigny. The road then climbs the Val de Bagnes to Le Châble and up to Verbier, about 160 km and 2 h in normal traffic. A private transfer delivers you to your chalet door, which is useful in a village on a steep hillside. Saturday arrivals are popular; a Friday or Sunday arrival can be calmer on the roads.
The mid-week move to Leukerbad
On transfer day the route descends to Martigny and follows the Rhône valley east past Sion and Sierre to Leuk, where a winding road climbs north into the Dala valley to Leukerbad. Allow roughly an hour and a half. You can ski a final morning in Verbier, have lunch, and arrive in Leukerbad in time for an evening soak. Practical points:
- Pack swimwear and flip-flops in an easily reached bag so you can head to the baths on arrival.
- Many Leukerbad hotels have their own thermal pools, so check what is included before you book.
- Keep ski gear dry in the car by using separate boot bags.
- A weekday move avoids Saturday traffic in the Rhône valley.
Recovery days in Leukerbad
The public thermal centres in Leukerbad offer pools at different temperatures, jets and relaxation areas, and some include saunas and treatments. Soaking after a morning on the slopes helps tired muscles, and an evening in the outdoor pools under the stars is a memorable part of the trip. Away from the water, winter walking paths lead along the valley, and in good conditions the Gemmi cable car climbs to the pass above the village for views across the Bernese Alps. The village itself is compact and easy to explore on foot.
The pacing of the week matters more than the exact split. Front-loading your hardest skiing into the Verbier days, when you are fresh, and scheduling the move for Wednesday or Thursday leaves enough time in Leukerbad for the warm water to do its work. Groups with mixed priorities can also split up: keen skiers stay an extra day in Verbier while others go ahead to the baths, with two separate transfers booked for the same day.
If you would rather keep skiing, the Torrent area's gentle runs suit a lighter pace, and you can always return to Verbier for a day with a chauffeur by the hour, minimum two hours.
Return to Geneva Airport
From Leukerbad, the drive back to GVA descends to the Rhône valley, follows it west to Lake Geneva and continues along the motorway to the airport. Allow around two and a half hours or a little more, with extra margin on busy weekends. An afternoon or evening flight lets you enjoy a final morning in the baths.
